The average salary in the UK?

It struck me that I have no idea what this is, in terms of (if I'm right with this) the modal average - the mean, I think, is about £26,000, but that is not a good reflection on what most people or families live on. Are there any stats to show what this is across the UK?

Interested because I'm job hunting at the moment, trying to plan ahead, and also because of the surge of threads on Mumsnet about how many people are struggling, and that number who are struggling seems to be climbling steadily this last few years whether it's to buy a house or to buy food. I wonder is the average (whatever it might be) enough to be comfortable on, and are the people who are really struggling (apart from crises such as health or debt etc) those who earn significantly less?

calamitous the figures we were discussing there were what's left after housing costs.

I'm not sure how one would get in any way accurate figures for average incomes after housing costs though.

but to a certain extent housing costs are a choice someone on a 100k plus may take on a huge mortgage out of choice for a bigger house than they strictly need that is a luxury although a housing cost; so they have less disposable income after housing costs to buy other luxuries

a family on 35k in london is probably looking for the cheapest possible 2 bed flat to rent their housing costs with probably be still higher than they would like; a family on 100K will not be looking at the same 2 bed flats their extra wealth gives them the option of not choosing the cheapest they can find so even comparuing income after housing costs would not be a fair reflection
