Jurassic park.

My grandfather, so DS great grandfather bought us all 3 Jurassic park films. I mentioned in passing I wanted to see them and DS likes dinosaurs so I know why he's brought them. My DS is 4 so he shall not be watching them too gory. But grandfather says I'm being over protective not letting him watch them, and he saw wise than that when that age (world war 2)

They say PG on them, what she would you allow a child to watch them?

Thanks

My DS watched it when about 7 (quite sensitive) and was fine with T rex attack, lawyer being eaten sitting on the bog, etc.

But when it got to the bit where the guy stealing the embryos is confronted by the cute looking dinosaur and it suddenly goes Hisssssssss and its frill comes up and the teeth come out - he was petrified and refused to watch any more.

It was many years before we could persuade him to watch the rest. He hates things that make you jump.

Recently we saw it in IMAX 3D and I didn't realise that DD (11 at the time) had never actually seen it. She was nearly climbing off the back of the seat!! Grin Mind you it was bloody LOUD - if you get the chance to see it in IMAX 3D and you like the film, I thoroughly recommend it - when the TRex roars you want to put your hands over your ears.

Mine haven't seen them yet but I'd let them watch them no problem, they're 5, 7 and 9.

the boys were 4 and 6 when they watched MIB and tbh, some bits of that are far gorier than JP

AntoinetteCosway · 04/05/2014 18:08

When the first one came out it was a 12. I know this because I was 11 and had to beg my usually very strict mother to allow me to go with a friend and her dad. I regretted it! I was petrified. Haven't watched it since Blush

stilllivingbythesea14 · 04/05/2014 18:22

Was it definitely a 12, Antoinette? Am positive it was a PG as I was ten and went.

Twoplusboys · 04/05/2014 18:22

Depends on child. My Ds is 5 and watched it. He understood it was pretend and dinosaurs aren't around anymore.

AntoinetteCosway · 04/05/2014 18:26

Could have sworn it-I remember having to plead with my mother and her dire warnings about the cinema staff asking my age and potentially catching me! Or maybe there was similar guidance around PG-did it mean 'parental guidance if under a certain age' like PG13 does in America?

Writerwannabe83 · 04/05/2014 18:26

My nephew loves dinosaurs and watched the films when he was about 5 and he absolutely loved them. He played them over and over again.

However, he's now 9 and refuses to watch it because the t-Rex scares him Smile

I don't think young children get scared by films like JP, they are too excited about the dinosaurs to have any other emotion Smile

AntoinetteCosway · 04/05/2014 18:28

You are quite right, it was a PG!

Hm, I wonder if my mum told me it was a 12 in order to try and convince me not to go. I remember a big argument about it! and then refusing to admit she was right when I had nightmare for weeks

stilllivingbythesea14 · 04/05/2014 18:30

Oops sorry! Hope I haven't caused a family rift! Wink Grin

I do think they are ridiculously violent for a PG, though - same with Jaws. I know some children will be fine with them but it really distressed me.

stilllivingbythesea14 · 04/05/2014 18:31

Evidently I was a "child of a nervous disposition"!

bakingaddict · 04/05/2014 18:31

My Dino mad DS watched them when he was about 3 or 4 and is a sensitive delicate petal. The only bits he got scared off was when they feed the raptors the goat and the mosquito in amber for some reason. He was more scared of Toy Story 3 and absolutely terrified of Latzo bear or whatever he was called. Kids minds are very strange indeed

AntoinetteCosway · 04/05/2014 18:31

Oh God, me too. I'm an adult of nervous disposition too when it comes to gore!

ContentedSidewinder · 04/05/2014 18:32

I think watching them in the day time, not near bed time and in bursts so not the whole film at once maybe a good idea.

Ds1 watched a behind the scenes thing on Jurassic Park before he watched it, he was about 8. Ds2 was 5 and not bothered in the slightest by any of it. They are very different children.

I talked to mine all the way through it (not over the film) but we stopped it, had a break, chatted about what we had seen etc.

Your call. It's your child and you have to deal with any of the fall out from it Grin

JennyCalendar · 04/05/2014 18:56

I was 9 when I saw it at the cinema (don't think 12 existed then). I loved it, but did jump at the goat leg dropping on the car and had to watch the kitchen scene through my fingers.

Watching in daylight, in the comfort of your own home, with the sound not too loud would be fine for a lot of children at a younger age, I would think.

specialsubject · 04/05/2014 19:07

I'm with the child who was cheering for the dinosaurs. The big flaw with these movies is that the incredibly annoying kids don't get eaten.

but yes, possibly a bit scary for those of a nervous disposition.

mrspremise · 04/05/2014 19:25

I ADORED Jurassic Park when I was little! You can't always second-guess what will scare or bother a child after all I was scared of my wallpaper Blush

MummyPig24 · 04/05/2014 19:26

Ds and dd have been watching them since they were 3 or 4.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 04/05/2014 19:30

My DD first watched them at 4, didnt bother her, shes watched Ghostbusters and she werent scared.

Strangely, Monsters University sends her out the living room scared.

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 04/05/2014 19:31

Ds1 was fine to watch them at four as he was dinosaur obsessed. Dd was two at the time and ignored it completely because she wasn't interested. It entirely depends on the child.

VeryStressedMum · 04/05/2014 19:49

My ds was 6 when we sat down to watch it, he was ok with it but I'd forgotten how gory it was. He liked it and has watched it a few more times since. Not sure I'd let a 4 yo watch it but it's up to you.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 04/05/2014 20:20

I was 7 when it came out and watched it on opening night, then again less than a week later Grin

My 3 yo has seen clips of it, and was fine, but doesnt really have the attention span for the full film

HermioneWeasley · 04/05/2014 20:22

My DD loved it when she was 2. She used to cry if the T. Rex wasn't on the screen.
