To feed my family on £1 per person per day

I've heard about celebs doing this and finding it almost impossible but really it's not that hard, I spend £25 a week (or less) on me and 3 kids. Am I a cheapskate or do other people spend this much? I shop at Aldi if that makes a difference. Maybe I'm depriving my kids by spending £1 a day on them. How much do you spend per person per day? Surely it's not that unreasonable to think £1 a day is plenty to feed yourself, why are people making such a fuss about it?

So is that a banana, an apple and an orange each a day? so 28 pieces of each? Do you only have 4pints of milk for 4 of you? How old are your DC? what fillers for sandwiches do you use?

I've just seen it's only 1 adult and 3 dc, i suppose it depends on your calorie needs. DH needs 3300cals a day, i need 2400 and DS needs 1200. I just don't think i could reach those calorific needs and be healthy on a £1 each. I could do it on a day of porridge made with water and value honey, Value jam sandwiches, and pasta and pesto but i wouldn't choose to do that unless we were in dire straights.

I spend about £3 a day on me and dh and £2 on ds i reckon - give or take on different days.

Cereal is 48 weetabix for £1.51. It's still the same budget in school holidays so the fact my eldest gets free school meals is irrelevant.

4 pints of milk will not last a week. 1 packet of frozen veg would not be enough for a week. 1 pack of bananas apples oranges would not last a week. If thats your shopping list you are not even coming close to 4 portions a day.

Busymumto3dc · 02/05/2014 22:33

I also don't see how one bag of frozen veg is lasting you a week as your only veg aside from onions and mushrooms

manicinsomniac · 02/05/2014 22:34

Wow, I spend more than that just on fruit! Blush

For me, 2 children and a tiny baby I probably spend about £75 - so triple your bill with an almost identical family!

I don't know if YABU, your shopping list sounds good.

gamerchick · 02/05/2014 22:34

we go through 2 boxes of cereal a week.. how do you manage with 3 kids and half a box a week?

you're being robbed on your onions.

Confusedintercity · 02/05/2014 22:35

4 pints of milk lasts me a day!

Dramatic · 02/05/2014 22:36

God knows how many calories I need, or them. I don't eat breakfast (through choice) I also don't eat fruit. They either have jam or ham sandwiches usually (my middle child is very fussy and will only eat jam sandwiches)

Busymumto3dc · 02/05/2014 22:36

How old are your dc?

48 weetabix a fortnight is 24 a week. Between 3 children is 8 each a week. So they have one max 2 per day? That's of course if you don't have any

GiveTwoSheets · 02/05/2014 22:36

Can you post your meals that you make out of that, I guess it depends on local shops as none round by me do 4pint of milk for that price or jam or even bread

How long does milk last especially if you have cereal?

What dinners are you making

SoftSheen · 02/05/2014 22:37

Dramatic

How is 4 pints of milk enough for four people for a week- that's just over half a pint a day, not enough for four bowls of cereal.

Likewise, how many yogurts do you get for 70p, and how do they last 4 people a week?

Ditto apples, oranges and bananas.

Dramatic · 02/05/2014 22:38

Yes 4 pints of milk lasts us a week (occasionally I have to buy another pint or two but that's literally the only top up I ever do) the kids aren't big mill drinkers.

Sparrowlegs248 · 02/05/2014 22:38

Actualy 6 pints of milk won't last me and DH a week. I have one cup of tea a.m. And maybe two after work. He has the same but with the addition of cereal.

I don't understand how you could manage with that little milk between uyou all.

EverythingsDozy · 02/05/2014 22:38

How on earth does one packet of chicken do 5 meals for 4 people?! If I buy a casserole pack of chicken which is £5 it does 3 meals for 3 people! And if you're buying frozen chicken pieces, I think we get 2 meals from them. Same with mince, frozen mince doesn't last all that long.

redandchecker · 02/05/2014 22:39

You spend no extra money whatsoever on food for your eldest when on holidays so the free school meals make no difference?
This makes no sense.
But if it's true, don't claim the free school meals then if it is making no benefit to you financially - send DC in with what they have at home in the holidays for lunch if it's just as healthy and costs no extra? Confused

hotcrosshunny · 02/05/2014 22:39

Are the little ones getting enough calcium? If they don't drink much milk they'll need other dairy to make up - I didn't see cheese on your list just yoghurt.

Dramatic · 02/05/2014 22:40

12 yogurts, my middle one doesn't like them either so my other two have one a day for 6 of the days. I usually get about 10 pieces of each fruit.

OP posts:
SavoyCabbage · 02/05/2014 22:40

We use 4 pints a day too. I just can't see what you are eating on that shopping list.

Busymumto3dc · 02/05/2014 22:41

Op how old are your dc

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 02/05/2014 22:41

If they are the aldi yogurts I'm thinking you get 6. I'm not doubting what you spend but if you middle child only eat jam sandwich's I think you are kidding yourself a bit that it is a healthy balanced diet.

We get through 16 pints of milk a week (2 adults 2 children)

Dramatic · 02/05/2014 22:41

I said the mince and chicken lasts 5 meals, bulked out with veg.

OP posts:
Busymumto3dc · 02/05/2014 22:42

But you buy very little veg

MrsKoala · 02/05/2014 22:43

I don't eat breakfast (through choice) I also don't eat fruit. They either have jam or ham sandwiches usually (my middle child is very fussy and will only eat jam sandwiches)

And you think this is quite a healthy diet? Sorry OP but i don't.

I have actually upped my food budget after recent threads have made me realise i was being far too tight restrictive. I understand if you don't have the extra budget to stretch. And i feel terrible that people can't afford decent food. But i wouldn't choose to eat like that and i wouldn't consider it healthy at all.

TequilaMockingbirdy · 02/05/2014 22:44

The carehome I worked in spent £1.33 on the residents per day, but they bought in bulk and their food was utterly miserable.

It can be done family wise but if you don't have to, you shouldn't.
