To wish people would stop their children picking wildflowers

We've just walked home and seen several children with big bunches of bluebells and other flowers. As nice as it is for them, they'll not last long at home and those bunches have wiped out most of the bluebells on out little stretch of road. I do know its not earth shattering but I was always told to leave alone everything except daisies and dandelions and have passed the same onto my children.

But if that bluebell was in a garden, would you have let him pick it?

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 02/05/2014 19:40

In addition, I said that I disagreed with the picking of wildflowers too. Have you really never let your preschooler do something you disagreed with. Really?

I wish I'd never said anything now. Of course I don't let him pick flowers out of people's gardens. That I would risk a tantrum over, obviously. ffs.

Plus it is really hard to explain to a 3 year old that yes, he can pick the dandelions and daisies, but not the others, but are working on it. He's a fully paid up member of the Dorset Wildlife Trust and the RSPB if that makes you feel better.

ThatBloodyWoman · 02/05/2014 19:43

No I didn't let my preschoolers do things I didn't agree with Cake.

If you will risk a tantrum to not pick from gardens, why risk a tantrum to not pick from the wild if you disagree with it? Confused

My DD can pick, but there are strict rules.

Stinkypinky73 · 02/05/2014 19:45

Yes, I let my children pick dandelions, clocks and daisies, but bluebells, primrose and daffodils are left alone!!

LackaDAISYcal · 02/05/2014 19:54

YANBU. I only let mine pick daisies. We did find some cherry blossom on the path last week, someone must have pulled them off and then dropped them and my two were picking them up. I was very aware that people might have thought we had picked them off the tree.

And I learnt the hard way not to pick random wild flowers when I was a child. I picked some Giant Hogweed to present to my mum and got horrible blisters between my fingers for my troubles!

Pianissimopleeeeease · 02/05/2014 19:54

My dd loves picking flowers and she is allowed to pick daisies, the odd buttercup on the green and dandelions because there are so many of them. She knows not to pick bluebells or daffodils.

I try to teach her a respect for nature and that other people want to enjoy the flowers too.

Lazy parenting when people allow their dc to pick all the lovely cultivated or wild flowers.

I do normally, but didn't today. I am human. It's fab that you are such a fantastic parent that you never give in to anything as if

I am glad it's not just me. I just don't get it when people don't do the maths on what would happen if everyone took their approach. Glad I had mn to help get it out of my system. I was a bit feeble when my friend expressed amazement that someone had told her off for letting her ds pick wildflowers last week.
