To be really disappointed in Next?

I am attending the dreaded "baby shower" this evening. My friend did not find out the sex of her baby at her scan. I went into town today to get a little present.
First place I go to look was the large national clothing chain, Next. I live in a big town, this is quite a big Next, big enough to have an upstairs.
I look around to find some little babygros or sleep suits in a nice neutral colour. Anything white, yellow or green would be fine. There was NOTHING. I asked the assistant for help in case I'd missed that rack but she couldn't find anything either. Everything had either pink bits or blue bits on it or pictures of pirates or princesses.
I was really quite put out. Next is such a well known brand. AIBU to expect them to provide at least something for people to buy for their baby before it's born if they don't know it's gender yet?
I'm not militant about raising children gender neutral or even particularly anti-pink. I just expected more from such a big name.

I tend to find that Next is pretty good online and in the big outlets, but not so good in the high St stores.

CrohnicallyHungry · 01/05/2014 13:12

YANBU- but they used to have really nice neutral stuff in- 2 years ago when I was pregnant I bought loads of colourful stripey clothes from there. And last year they had white stuff with sheep on. I wonder what changed? Or maybe it's your store- my local one is on a retail park and huge, the smaller stores must stock fewer lines and perhaps it's the neutrals that had to go?

Harrin · 01/05/2014 13:13

Maybe it was just that particular store? I bought a neutral sleep suit from there last month for a baby shower gift and my friend managed to buy lots of pieces online in neutral colours too.

I do always find the selection in store very limited though when it comes to neutrals.

Harrin · 01/05/2014 13:15

Cross post with crohnically

My local store is huge and on a retail park too

Pregnantberry · 01/05/2014 13:16

We found that as well! YANBU, but I think the reason is just matching supply with demand when so many people find out the gender ahead of time now. It is annoying though.

Agree with Rachel that Next are best online, any of the less common stuff they seem to never do in stores (same goes for maternity wear, for example, which is all online).

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 01/05/2014 13:18

Ah, maybe that was it. Even though it's a fair size, it is only on the high street and not in a retail park. Although I'm sure I've been in there before in the past and they have had a boy baby, a girl baby and a neutral baby section.
I ended up in Gap in the end, they had a few nice bits to choose from and 30% off everything(!!) so I came home happy in the end anyway.

I've been buying their 3 for £16 baby grows which are really lovely quality, lots of little attractive details, plus built in mitts. I like to buy for DD in store, as she is small for her age and i need to see what i'm buying. It's true now you mention it, i don't recall seeing much in the way of neutrals.

Unhelpful post really, sorry!

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 01/05/2014 13:29

Next have got some lovely neutral babygro's that are green, red and some with animals. Maybe they just didn't have them in that particular shop.

I've bought them for dc2, and we don't know what we're having.

MyBalletShoes · 01/05/2014 13:30

They have some lovely yellow/green/ white/orange babygros in at the moment! Look online, buy online and you can always get it delivered to store, next day, for free.

Dieu · 01/05/2014 13:37

I LOVE Next for baby clothes. They do sleepsuits with wee scratch mitts attached.

TheresLotsOfFarmyardAnimals · 01/05/2014 13:38

Just go to Boots, M&S or Mothercare for nice babygros instead.

StrawberryGashes · 01/05/2014 13:59

I've been looking online in next for neutral slepe suits and I found it a bit of a struggle tbh getting something neutral. I found one star sleepsuit, a pack of lion sleepsuits and a pack of ladybird sleepsuits. That is out of 65 sleep suit options. The rest have either blue or pink in them.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 01/05/2014 14:21

There are frog and monkey ones.

SlimJiminy · 01/05/2014 14:41

YANBU - that would've pissed me off too. I only buy gender-neutral for my friends' babies even when I know the sex. Next is usually my first choice and I've never had any problems finding something I like. Hoping it was a one-off!

StrawberryGashes · 01/05/2014 16:22

pobble I couldn't find any frog ones and the monkey ones are all blue rather than neutral. I managed to get bright, colourful ones a couple of years ago but nothing now.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 01/05/2014 16:26

He monkey one is red stripes and there is also an animal one. I went to a big Next mind, is maybe that's the difference. If you look online you'll see them. I think there was a lion one too.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 01/05/2014 16:26

Sorry for all the typos, I'm on my phone.

StrawberryGashes · 01/05/2014 17:07

It's online I'm looking, I'll have another look and see if I can find it.

liquidstatehasrisenagain · 01/05/2014 17:25

Gap and H&M are best for brights. Next, debenhams and M&S all full of pink or blue with a small selection of cream/white which I find dull. And this is in the big stores imo which is rubbish. Everywhere else is pastels in the girls section and brights in the boys section.

I have not found out the sex of my baby either so shopping has been hard. If you have time to order online I would recommend pumpkin patch. Gorgeous colours and fab quality. Grin

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 01/05/2014 17:28

I spent an hour staring at a rail of yellow, white and green babygros in Next last week while ds faffed around picking a new pair of shoes and some socks.

gordyslovesheep · 01/05/2014 17:40

this is the unisex stuff

gordyslovesheep · 01/05/2014 17:40

not a big range is it? I never got clothes as gifts though - I like teddies and stuff

MyrtleDove · 01/05/2014 18:25

Boots is also good for neutral brights in baby clothes.

listsandbudgets · 01/05/2014 18:40

Have you seen [http://www.amazon.co.uk/s?ie=UTF8&field-keywords=Inda-Bayi&index=clothing&search-type=ss this range]] of baby stuff OP? May fit what you need though a bit late for this evening

listsandbudgets · 01/05/2014 18:41
