... Admittedly I do not always dress her in head to toe pink shudders but she does have a pink - lined pram and is often in a dress of some sort. She is 1, but has very little hair (bless her) its beautiful white blonde and she is a beautiful baby obviously but I do understand lack of hair makes one assume - boy.

As I stated though, i dress her in fairly girly hear most of the time and she is in a pink pram. I don't care when people ask how old is he? But then when I correct them they get mortified with embarrasses me. I do it politely and sometimes not at all.

I just get frustrated as she is in girls clothes in a pink pram- wtf? I they just took one second to look a little closer than her head! Esspecially if they want to take the time to comment.

AIBU? Maybe I am being a but pfb ...

Ps I am not resorting to hair band, ear peircing or hair clips!

YABU. It doesn't matter in the least.

I secretly quite like it when people think 16wo DD is a boy, because it means she's not covered in pink tat. And it happens a lot because she has a blue car seat, a red pram and wears a lot of unisex/boys' clothes. It always faintly amuses me that people just assume.

When #1 son was a baby, he would be called "she" all the time. If I corrected people, I would hear, "oh, he's too pretty to be a boy." I finally gave up.

All three of my kids had a lot of hair from birth, but the eldest was the only one people got confused. I don't know why.

DD was never covered in pink tat as she has inherited a lot of her older brother's clothes. She currently wear's her brother's navy space mac and nobody has ever said she is a boy. Also, my MIL buys her lots of clothes and they are usually from the boy's section but even wearing this stuff she was never thought to be a boy. That's why I think it is a lot to do with hair and long eye lashes as people associate these with femininity- cultural perceptions of gender. Disney probably have a lot to answer for!

There's a neighbor boy I thought was a girl for at least 3 years because he had long hair. Until one day he got a new do, and was wearing boy clothes outside. Then it clicked and now that I look at him, I can't believe I ever thought he was a girl. But there you have it.

threads like this one make me want to put my long-haired 3 year old and 1 year old boys in pigtails and see who goes off hair and who choses based on clothes

I would say everyone would guess they're little girls, and then they'd look at you funny for putting boys in an obvious girl hair style. Wink

I see lots of people dress their little girls up in boy clothes, and then accessorize their hair with barrettes/bows or something similar. It happens all the time around sports season, all the little girls are decked up in their parent's favorite team.

I invariably guess wrong when there are no obvious hair/clothing clues (and even sometimes when there are). So I have learned to say, "How old is your child?" rather than "How old is he?"

DP has long hair. When DS was aged about 5 or 6 he tried to grow his hair long like daddy Grin

Sadly, he then decided to get it cut because he was fed up of being mistaken for a girl.

Looking at photos of the time, he clearly at that time did have a very androgynous look to his face, could very easily be mistaken for a girl. He's a little more boyish now.

DD was always a girl, no mistaking her at all.

Thanks for all the feedback! Made me :) an relieved that it is so common! The funny thing is dd really has a feminine face, wears girlish clothes- so I do think it is down to hair often (as pp have stated)

I will laugh more and worry less i think! I only worry because I feel sorry for my pretty little lady. I get annoyed a bit too as its rather obvious in every other aspect (aside from her hair) she is female.

Anyway I probably am being a bit unreasonable. I guess ill just have to resort to seeing he funny side more often! It's not a major issue after all!

People do it all the time and tbf, sometimes it is difficult to tell. Here is a test, what do you think, Boy or Girl?

Interesting Keep that you were more convinced by the 2nd picture.

It is a boy - used to regularly get mistaken for a girl, not any more though, at nearly 13 the burgeoning moustache and lanky teen boyness gives it away. Still quite pretty though :o

Well she is very beautiful and still has lovely eyebrows. Grin

Aww thanks Airy - the girls in his class used to love sticking clips in his hair and one thought he was the prettiest in the class - he is all boy though and I think it was a ploy to get in with the girls......

OP I'm sure your dd is very cute but the reality is that small children look androgenous (other than what's covered by the nappy). Unless you tout her round naked then people will make mistakes.

I have a 7 yr old dd who is without fail mistaken for a boy.

I booked her into the hairdresser in her name, a girl's name, not unisex. Got there, first time we'd been, said this is minika. The girls said, "we do boys upstairs, so we'll go this way".
Confused "but she's called minika, what do you think it is, a bit like that song, a boy called Sue?"
They were obviously too young to know/remember a the song, so my humour was list on them.

Anyway, I wasn't annoyed, more amused.
I don't think she looks like a boy and she isn't bothered in the slightest, which is what matters!

He's lovely looking soontobe I'm sure those looks will develop into very handsome features before you know it.

Btw, I have a very 'pretty' nearly 10 year old boy also Smile

I find brunette babies with visible hair more attractive, not a fan of the bald blonde look (sorry!).

Floggingmolly · 01/05/2014 20:30

This is probably why all those baldy baby girls wear those ridiculous headbands...

Thanks Fenton - yes, he s turning into a handsome lad as I am sure yours will too. I'm convinced that the more androginous the looks in both girls and boys, the better looking adults they become, possibly becasue their features appeal to more people.

We were at the science centre and did one of those computer image things where you can make your face more male or female - his barely changed when clicked to be more female but change a lot to be more male.

So it just goes to show that it's not always easy to tell and I did used to wonder what people were on when my boy was dressed in "boy" clothes and was still mistaken for a girl, but when I look back now at photos I realise why they were mistaken.
