To wish meter readers would make an appointment!

Our gas and electricity meters are in the only cupboard in the house. I've just had to haul the entire contents of said cupboard out from under the stairs. All the while the poor guy had to stand in the kitchen looking at the unwashed dinner dishes, half sorted washing and overflowing recycling bin.

If they just made an appointment I could have arranged to clear the space in advance. Much quicker for all concerned surely?

Also, it is bugging me that "metre reader" just looked wrong in the title so I changed it to "meter reader" and now I don't know which is right. We spell it "metre" don't we?

YANBU, our gas meter is at the back of our very deep under stairs cupboard. We had a meter reader come when dd2 was just a few days old, and dh had put his back out. I told him I couldn't empty the cupboard and he was quite brusque and stroppy about it. He came again three months later when dh was in, and he asked him to come back later to allow us time to empty the cupboard. He was apparently very rude. DH emailed a complaint to eon and the boss meter reader phoned up to apologise and promised we'd never be sent that meter reader again!

I can't imagine that it would be too difficult when they send the bill that they could write on it "your next meter reading will be taken on x date" to at least give people an idea.

We get emailed for our readings but the meter reader still turns up at odd times - last time two days after we had submitted online.

I refused him access as I was still in my dressing gown and he got stroppy about how he needed to do a gas safety check on the meter and insisted I had to let him in by law. Funnily enough he couldn't provide his Gas Safe registration card, and given that DH is a GS trainer I think we are pretty sure our gas supply is safe.
