AIBU regarding kids clothes...

Help! I think I've been taken over by aliens, I was browsing the children's clothes at the shops yesterday and had the overwhelming urge to buy matching outfits for my DDs (ages 3yrs & 6mths). The only mitigation I have is that the tops were very pretty and at least they weren't pink.

Am IBU and am I going to turn into Maria Von Trapp & start converting curtains? If my DH finds out he will probably disown me. Advice needed.

My 12 and 8 year old girls actively choose to match themselves.

We live in the arse-end of nowhere with limited shops, so inevitably they do have some clothes that are the same/similar.

I did catch myself dressed the same as DD1 the other day, both wearing jeans with a blue and white striped top - we took one look at each other (DD1 with barely disguised horror) and changed pronto

TessTackle · 30/04/2014 11:54

Little sister is3 years younger and we had the same stuff on different colours to stop her tantrums about what I was wearing.

X3512 · 30/04/2014 11:58

2tired. -that is hilarious! I love your mum's logic there.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 30/04/2014 12:08

I will confess I used to do it when my girls were small. It was many years ago though, not the done thing nowadays. I stopped when they asked me to though.

I think having little twins in the same clothes in different colours is really sweet though.

MrsBennetsEldest · 30/04/2014 12:13

My mother used to dress me in the same outfit as my Brother! If we weren't matching we were wearing the same thing but different colours. I used to long for a dress. This went on until I was 12!

MissDuke · 30/04/2014 12:15

My mum made my girls matching dresses for Christmas, they are 9 and 2! DD1 then convinced her to make another for her doll!! It is cute actually, despite the big age gap.

ThePigOfHappiness · 30/04/2014 12:45

I do it for my girls for special occasions like Christmas or Easter or Halloween. It's funny. I don't give a shiny shite what anyone else thinks though.
Dm used to dress dsis and me in hand knitted jumpers in different colours.

Lambzig · 30/04/2014 12:59

I would love to wear the same dress as my daughter, but am fighting the urge so as to not scar her for life.

GobbolinoCat · 30/04/2014 13:05

I am def going to be matching up mine at some point!

pommedeterre · 30/04/2014 13:06

I keep doing this. Worrying. In my defence now dd2 is 2 they both compare and contrast if I get them different things and invariably judge the other ones as better. Buggers.

wigglesrock · 30/04/2014 13:08

I've done it when mine were a bit younger especially with summer dresses. I think the last time I did it dd1 was 6 & dd2 4. They wouldn't wear the same outfits now (8,6) Dd3 is a law unto herself regarding clothes.

My dds all have short fringed bobs for as long as I can persuade them - around 6ish. So dd2 & dd3 had short blonde fringed bobs for a year or so. I have very grey dark short hair Smile

BetweenDogandWolf · 30/04/2014 13:24

I've always thought dressing children in matching outfits to be very weird and the people that do it all the time must be trying to show off that they buy all their DC's clothes new! Recently though aI bought myself a new coat in a sale... a nice burgundy one the same colour and similar style to my DD's. We also have matching fairly distinctive hair!Grin I've had quite a lot of comments including one person openly laughing at me. But luckily I don't really care what any one thinks.Grin

5madthings · 30/04/2014 13:28

I knew a Mum with twins who always wore identical clothes, when one got dirty ie possessed milk or had a leaky nappy etc she would change BOTH so that they still matched!! That seemed crazy.

As I said my mum did this and I hated it so have never done it with my boys. I hand their clothes down and don't buy the same thing in diff sizes really, ds3 recently got a new t shirt, a present. Turns out it is the same as one ds2 has (minecraft pic on it) ds2 had a fit and they always make sure they aren't both wearing it.

Tupperwife · 30/04/2014 13:42

My DSs (aged 5 and 2) regularly dress themselves in identical outfits.

My parents used to dress my brother and I in matching outfits in national colours when we went on holiday (think blue and yellow striped tshirts in Sweden), on the grounds that helpful strangers would return a lost looking child to a matching one even if we didn't speak the language.

IdkickJilliansAss · 30/04/2014 13:46

I sometimes match my DS to my DH Blush not full on matching outfits but a pair of shorts here and a waistcoat there...

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 30/04/2014 13:49

My parents used to do this to me. I can remember going to church on Sunday age 10 in the same dress as my 3, 5 & 8 yr old sister. Blush

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 30/04/2014 13:49

OP - get help now. Call the MN HV that everyone seems to have access to on here Grin

Jinty64 · 30/04/2014 13:57

Ds1 and ds2 (23 months apart) used to have a few outfits the same and I used to do co-ordinated colour schemes. I like the matching photos. I have also colour co-ordinated dh and ds3 (then 3) for a wedding.

curiousgeorgie · 30/04/2014 13:57

I have a 2.5 year age gap and since DD2 arrived I have dressed them matching for occasions like Christmas & Family parties... And Easter... And a sunny day Wink

I can't help myself!! I pick up something I like and when I realise they have it in both sizes it feels like favouritism not to buy both! Grin

IdkickJilliansAss · 30/04/2014 13:59

I'm glad i'm not alone Jinty Smile

Chocotrekkie · 30/04/2014 14:01

I love love mine in matching outfits - they point blank refuse to wear them now.

Tupperwife · 30/04/2014 14:08

2tired2bewitty are you me? We went to some pretty obscure places, so it was probably genius.

HeirToTheIronThrone · 30/04/2014 14:11

Reading this I've just had a flashback of my Nana making me, DB AND DM matching long stripy Bermuda shorts and being made to wear them all together shudders

judypoops · 30/04/2014 14:18

My mum put my sister and I in matching culotte (sp?) suits at age 8 & 10 Shock and there is photographic evidence

BrokenToeOuch · 30/04/2014 14:20

Tupperware, your parents idea is genius Grin

YANBU if you want them to wear matching things. Mine sometimes did when they were small, and sometimes choose the same clothes when we take them shopping now they're older. I can't honestly understand anyones logic behind hating it, if it's because of 'identity', well, that's made up of a lot more than what clothes you're wearing Confused, but each to their own.

My DDs pick their own clothes and dress themselves these days, and being 8 and 9 have quite similar tastes. They might wear the same shorts and different t-shirts or they might be totally matching, it's up to them. And when your own DC can pick out their own clothes and dress themselves it will be their decision. Until then, put them in what you like.
