To wonder whether you'd prefer to go to Malory Towers or the Chalet School

I just heard to girls about 11 years of age having an earnest discussion about this on the bus. I didn't think kids even read Chalet School books any more.
I think I'd opt for Malory Towers. They seemed to have more fun. I'd probably be expelled from the Chalet School for cursing, wearing lipstick and forgetting to speak German every Wednesday or whatever it was.

thebody Jesus titty fucking Christ. I've just realised my entire 'imprint' was Mr Denny!!! All my early bfs were tortured artists with long hair and more than a touch of the fey... how could I not have worked that out???

(DH is more of a Gaudenz)

thebodydoestricks · 01/05/2014 21:36

My dsis did her MA thesis on girls lit of the 30s and I am sure that was any excuse to read them all as an adult legitimately. Lucky mare.

thebodydoestricks · 01/05/2014 21:42

Wilson oh fucking brilliant. So funny. Mmm so you got Gaudenz aye! Lucky bugger. Always thought he was hot.

I had a bit of a thing for Old Herr Braun myself. Grin

SockQueen · 01/05/2014 21:43

I always assumed Mr Denny was not so secretly gay.

mummytime · 01/05/2014 21:47

I thought that about Mr Denny too.

lessonsintightropes · 01/05/2014 21:50

Yup Mr Denny almost certainly gay. I actually think that EBD was great at giving strong and positive gay role models of both genders even if it was almost certainly inadvertently

WilsonFrickett · 01/05/2014 21:58

At least one of my exes is bi aka gay but too scared to come out properly

On the bright side, DH is putting up some shelves tomorrow Grin and then later he'll probably go and rescue some St Bernard puppies and help with a rescue operation up the alpe.

loopylocket · 01/05/2014 22:12

Mallory towers always! never really like chalet school. Plus last summer got to swim in pool like the one in Mallory towers. fantastic!

crazycatwoman · 01/05/2014 22:13

Chalet School all the way. I have visited where is was set - just beautiful, although when I went the hotel that she based the school on was closed and locked in an inheritance battle.

For those interested in getting copies check out Girls Gone by Publishers - they have unabridged reprints of many of the books (unlike the armada paperbacks) and links to dealers (and the friends of the chalet school society if you really want to go the whole hog).

These were my favorite books as a child, actually still are, and I can't wait for my daughter to be old enough to enjoy them. I enjoyed Mallory Towers too, but just not as much!

BoffinMum · 01/05/2014 22:20

I love the Chalet School so much I am going to shag Gove so he lets me set a new one up as a Free School.

BoffinMum · 01/05/2014 22:22

Can I flag up there is a great Kinderhotel reasonably near the Achensee that is ideal for MNetters of the Chalet School persuasion. Justsayin'

crazycatwoman · 01/05/2014 22:28

ok, should have read the whole thread before posting... :-)

As someone else has already mentioned them I'm a Lone Pine fan too...

Toospotty · 01/05/2014 23:29

Boffin, that may well be the one we stay in. There's one in Buchau but we love the one in Achenkirch. Is that your one too?

thebodydoestricks · 01/05/2014 23:45

Boffin Grin

I am all for playing for ones side but shagging Gove! Beyond the call of duty even for a guide!

I just ran lightly as a girl to get another glass of wine.

That's what Joey, Frieda,Marie and Simone needed. Wine and contraception.

Definatly EBD addressed gay/lesbian role models. Tom Gay, Bill, Jack Lambert, Tristian Denny etc.

Not sure EBD realised that though. Grin

WilsonFrickett · 02/05/2014 00:11

boffin before you set up your Free Chalet School you may want to check out a thread entitled 'If Ofstead went to the Chalet School' (or similar, Wine has been had). It will help with your planning for the term.

Vintagejazz · 02/05/2014 10:04

Didn't Madge call one of her sons Kester? Hmmm.

OP posts:
Martorana · 02/05/2014 10:13

Boffin - do you have keen blue eyes that have never yet needed glasses? . Because if not, no funding for you...........

meditrina · 02/05/2014 10:15

Madge's children are David, Sybil, Josette, Aline (Ailie), and twins Kevin and Kester. She's also guardian to Jem's orphaned nieces Daisy and Primula Venables.

WilsonFrickett · 02/05/2014 10:25

Proof if proof were needed... it wasn't Canada that got Madge back to her old self Grin

HowsTheSerenity · 02/05/2014 10:26

Mallory Towers! Although I would have been the plump spotty one who failed at French and would never be a prefect.
And what kind of name is Darrel for a girl?

DeWee · 02/05/2014 10:27

Crazycat Lone Pine's been mentioned a few times. Are you a member of the Malcolm Saville Society?

Considering the effort EBD went to give her main characters huge families, it's funny how the majority of the rest of the school are either only children or twins (with no known siblings) or one of a pair, the second of whom is regarded as totally colourless

WilsonFrickett · 02/05/2014 10:27

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/a1626409-The-chalet-school-and-ofsted it's amazing how much easier it is to search threads when one is sober.

Where's MissAnnersley got to these days?

Vintagejazz · 02/05/2014 10:41

I believe Mary Lou drove hershe turned to the drink Wilson. Very sad.

OP posts:
thebodydoestricks · 02/05/2014 10:46

Wilson loved that thread.

DeWee yes that's right lots of only children.

Just to show how wonderful Joeys womb was. Grin

DeWee · 02/05/2014 10:55

And so Joey could make snide comments about other people's parenting while ignoring her own
