To want better "older men" role models in society

This is in light of the Max Clifford conviction, of course, but it got me thinking... Since the whole Yewtree inquiry started, and even way before that, all we're seeing at the moment is dirty old men in the media and I'm wondering what effect it will have long term - I don't want DD growing up thinking this is normal. Can we have some more lovely, wise old grandad figures for our kids to look up to, please, just like their own lovely grandads?

I know what you mean, I was proper disappointed in Rolf Harris, I used to cry with him at Animal Hospital FFS..

But, they are out there;

I love Sir Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart they are excellent actors, best of friends and seem lovely. IM even presided over PS wedding. And he does panto every year for the love of it.
I read on here I think, that Bernard Cribbins is a bit of a luvvie, but he's brilliant in Old Jacks Boat. My two love him and I know somebody who has worked with him that says he's very nice.

My favourite 'older person' is Liz Smith, especially as Nana Royle, she's wonderful. Grin

They are just ace. Grin

Love Liz smith.
Scared to say any men's names tbh.

But yes, Bernard cribbing seems lovely.
And everyone seems to have liked Richard briers (RIP)

Oh. Tony Benin (RIP). He seemed like a decent man.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 29/04/2014 06:27

Sorry, cribbins.

RatHammock · 29/04/2014 06:32

David Attenborough & Michael Palin both fit the bill, IMHO.

subtleplansarehereagain · 29/04/2014 07:13

Yy to Sir Patrick Stewart - and he's brilliant on Twitter!

It's hard to think of any others at the moment! Are older men becoming as invisible as older women? What about Sir Tom Jones? Oh, and Stirling Moss :)

CoreyTrevorLahey · 29/04/2014 07:23

George Takei Smile. He's wonderful.

OddBoots · 29/04/2014 07:25

Morgan Freeman seems like a really decent chap and I've got a soft spot for Billy Connolly and Bill Murray (if they're old enough to count)

AbbeyBartlet · 29/04/2014 07:30

I think you are right, OP.

However, like PP I would have to say Bernard Cribbins! I always wanted him to be my grandad! He seemed to be on TV every day when I was a kid and when he was in Doctor Who he was awesome!

AbbeyBartlet · 29/04/2014 07:31

And YY to the other posters' suggestions!

KikitheKitKat · 29/04/2014 07:42

Mick Jagger (well he hasn't been done for child abuse anyway!).

AlexReidsLonelyBraincell · 29/04/2014 07:59

Yy George Takei, can't believe I left him out, his Oh myyyy FB page is great.

MiaSparrow · 29/04/2014 09:44

Yeah, I think perhaps older men are becoming as invisible as older women, subtle. And if they're not, it's all for the wrong reasons - certainly at the moment.

Remember lovely Tony Hart? Wah!

Johnny Ball seems like a lovely man. Think of a Number was a great wee show when I was a kid.

Has Rolf Harris been convicted? I thought the trial hadn't started yet.

YANBU

I really admired Tony Benn, as said upthread. Also, Jon Snow (newsreader) seems to me decent.
