to want his desk?

My colleague is leaving in 2 weeks (resigned, not fired), and I really want his desk. It's next to a window, rather than sitting as I currently do with my back to the windows. Also it's further into the corner of the office, meaning there's a bit more room for my (pet) dog to stay out of people's way. It's not bigger, I don't think, it's just in a nicer position.

So I don't think I'm BU to want it... At what point do I ask if I can move? Obviously not before he's left - that'll come across a tad insensitive, but when, the next Monday? A week later? The end of the month? I would need to move the computer, but could do that after work; I tend to stay later than everyone else, so wouldn't cause a drama about moving things.

Who do you need to ask? I would email them sooner rather than later as someone may ask first!

LaurieFairyCake · 28/04/2014 15:33

Ask the manager immediately, he's not dying just off to a new job.

FrigginRexManningDay · 28/04/2014 15:34

I am more intrigued about your dog. Do you bring it to work?

emsyj · 28/04/2014 15:35

I would just ask asap if you can move there when he's gone and play up the fact that it will be more convenient for everyone else as there'll be more space for your dog there. Get in first before someone else bagsies it!

sunbathe · 28/04/2014 15:35

Ask now, before someone else does.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 28/04/2014 15:36

I'd email your boss now and get first dibs on it.

Someone else might be thinking the same thing.

Loopyster · 28/04/2014 15:39

You have the balls to take your dog to work, asking about moving desks should be fine, surely?

Nomama · 28/04/2014 15:39

Yeah - get dibs.. NOW!

ThePrisonerOfAzkaban · 28/04/2014 15:45

Ask now!

CabinetSauvinyoni · 28/04/2014 15:49

Definitely ask now!

MimiSunshine · 28/04/2014 15:50

I left a company last year and one girl came up as soon as it was announced to "ask" me if she could have my desk once I'd gone?

Obviously it didn't matter if I said no but I laughed and said yes, do you want my pen pot as well. Then told everyone who 'politely enquired' who was taking my seat in the week before I left that said girl was moving in.

Its never too early to ask when its prime office real estate

AgaPanthers · 28/04/2014 15:52

What kind of dog is it?

SpringBreaker · 28/04/2014 15:53

How does your dog feel about the move?

Frettchen · 29/04/2014 10:59

Fairly overwhelming response there - thanks. Manager's working from home today so I'll pop an e-mail together to ask.

The dog doesn't seem to mind where he's put as long as he has something to chew on and gets a nice walk at lunch time! He's the first picture on my profile - half samoyed half small mixed-breed stray from Romania (totally outing me if anyone from work is on here!). He comes in to the office with me every day.

I wanna take my dog to work Sad Grin

Cupid5tunt · 29/04/2014 12:47

We always have dogs padding about our office. I love it, although it can make the tea/coffee run a bit tricky Grin

Cupid5tunt · 29/04/2014 12:47

Oh and OP email now and ask.

AwfulMaureen · 29/04/2014 12:50

If I had a business I'd totally allow dogs in the office....they're good for the soul!
