To take my DD fishing?

I've never done it but always fancied it. I am just not sure if it is cruel or not? So we would only be fresh water fishing, anything we catch will be thrown back. DP says that because the hook is so sharp it doesn't damage he fishes' mouth but i can't see that it doesn't hurt? Funnily enough i wouldn't have a problem with sea fishing if i were going to actually eat the fish, but i wouldn't want to damage a fish and then let it go, if that makes sense.

Lots of the fisheries do lessons for juniors-they provide tackle, bait and also instruction. This is probably the best way to learn as you're not forking out for something she may not enjoy, and they'll show you how to not harm the fish.

I feel the same about fishing for sport.

I imagine the fish swimming along - happy in their own world, when all of a sudden they're gasping to breath and dangling from a hook stuck in their gums...before being tossed back in again.

I always say if fish could scream, there would be less people fishing for sport.

Some of my happiest childhood memories are going fishing with my DF. It wasn't just the fishing; the time I spent just with him was the most important part of it.

If you can say to yourself, "I am fine with disturbing wildlife as a leisure pursuit", then it's OK for you to go. It's not illegal. I wouldn't do it myself.

If you don't have a problem with sea fishing because you can eat the fish, why not go fishing for trout? You could eat that instead of catch and release.

FurryDogMother · 27/04/2014 09:42

There's quite a lot of catch and release involved in sea fishing too, because you don't always catch edible species...

NewNameForSpring · 27/04/2014 09:48

If you eat the fish surely it is fine. Hooking it and throwing it back, surely that is not fine. And what is the point anyway?

LEMmingaround · 27/04/2014 10:05

See. You are all saying how I feel about it. I think we will stick to catching a few newts with nets

Dh takes dd fishing often. ~She is 8 she has her own rod, and has learnt how to unhook a fish safely and let it go.

Its a nice quiet time for her and her daddy - even if they dont catch anything she always has a good time especially if they stay on the bank over night :)

softlysoftly · 27/04/2014 11:30

DD1 caught her first fish at 2 she loved it.

But then I'm a hunting shooting fishing country girl so feel free to ignore me Grin

Most kids would be bored stiff quickly. I enjoyed fishing a bit with my uncle when I was about 10, but I was a pretty quiet person.

I used to fish, my ex and former DH went fishing.

My youngest DD enjoyed Sea Fishing. She quite liked bashing the head of Mackerel against a rock to kill them quickly.

I went Vegan, so stopped.

I struggle watching big fish on television programmes, after all, we wouldn't watch mammals being held under water, for fun, in the way the presenters hold the fish gasping.

Research the humane hooks, they are available at low cost on all of the fishing gear websites.
