Killing minky whales

Please can anyone tell me how you could possibly eat an animal that can communicate, show deep affection for it's own kind, show curiosity to humans but not harm them. My parents tried to eat it during the war, as there was little meat to be had, their verdict was, it smelt very strong, almost off, very dark in colour, and so tough it was impossible to chew and swallow. Go figure???????

Whales aren't the only animals that communicate, show affection and curiosity so I'm not sure why they are any different to other animals apart from conservation issues.

Quinteszilla · 26/04/2014 21:25

So, eating stupid animals, are ok then?

I think you will find that a lot of food stuff eaten during the war was "almost off" and perhaps not as appealing to the palate as it would otherwise be.

Salmotrutta · 26/04/2014 21:25

And yes, I understand that they are intelligent but they are still part of a food chain really.

LEMmingaround · 26/04/2014 21:27

Pigs are supposed to have he IQ of a three year old child :(

Quinteszilla · 26/04/2014 21:29

I think, if you are carnivore, you cant claim the moral high-ground, and discriminate between animals due to their looks, intelligence, etc. There is no sense in explaining why are eat pork/beef/mutton/chicken/fish, yet draw the line at specific animals, conservation issues aside. I would not eat an endangered species.

ICanSeeTheSun · 26/04/2014 21:31

Op are you a vegetarian, do you eat meat.

I will always think that killing an animal to eat it then it doesn't matter the species. You either eat meat or you don't.

A Vegan lifestyle is kindest

Alisvolatpropiis · 26/04/2014 21:43

All mammals communicate with each other and bond with their young though, don't they?

Cows, sheep, pigs (very clever indeed) all do those things.

I'm a meat eater but I can see why it is flawed. I'm considering a move to a more vegetarian way of life. The "meat free Monday" thing I started doing has increasingly spread over the week. Of course, if being honest with myself, I would have to go vegan because the dairy industry is appalling in it's own right.

However, even if I continued to eat meat, that doesn't mean I wouldn't prefer a more humane way for the industry to work. I'd campaign for it. For now I vote with my money so to speak, only buying the most ethically reared, fed and slaughtered animals. It's not perfect, I'm not. But I try.

Quint no human is a carnivore, meat eating people are omnivores, we can't survive without other types of nutrition.

WooWooOwl · 26/04/2014 21:44

Personally, I object to eating anything that lives in water.

I eat meat, but as I'm a land dweller I prefer to stick to my own food chain rather than invade other creature's.

A Vegan lifestyle is kindest

Apart from all the animals whose habitats are destroyed by agriculture. Apart from that, it's really kind.

Quinteszilla · 26/04/2014 21:47

Alis - of course, but you did understand what I meant, in the context?

countrybump · 26/04/2014 21:49

There's no humane way to kill a minke whale. That's why it's unethical to eat their meat.

Alisvolatpropiis · 26/04/2014 21:58

I did, may have been being a tad pedantic Quint. Sorry!

I actually agree that the intelligent and emotionally complex an animal is, the worse killing and eating it is - closer to murder really. Where to draw the line is indeed tricky through - clearly killing a higher primate or a dolphin is horrendous compared to say killing a locust or an earthworm - where's the line?
I agree with whoever said that going vegan is the only humane option, but yes by virtue of our lifestyle and existence we're still going to be affecting other living creatures.
I'm also not convinced that human life is that much more special than any other animal really.

Waltonswatcher1 · 26/04/2014 22:41

Lollerskates
All animals bred for human consumption need to eat . This feed uses up far more land and resources than growing veg for consumption .

Infernal · 26/04/2014 22:51

To answer query, no I don't eat meat, haven't for 30 years and don't miss it. sometimes it is difficult to avoid, to quote Linda Macartney, I never eat anything with a face. Just felt uncomfortable about it.

Seriously...... Is that a serious post? How about adopting the same attitude towards animals. No? Hmm

cantbelievethisishppening · 26/04/2014 23:10

Doh..... iPad crud

Infernal · 27/04/2014 10:05
