to send ds to OOSC when he is the only child

I just got a call from OOSC and he will be the only one attending, i feel sad that he will be alone but I it will be difficult to do anything else at short notice. There were others booked in but two have cancelled and two are ill. there can be as many as 10 or 12. They appeared to want me to cancel but said they would run the session and get admin jobs done. he is seven

What's OOSC?

RhinestoneCowgirl · 24/04/2014 14:15

do you mean after school club?

vickibee · 24/04/2014 14:16

Out of School or Holiday Club

Well if you have no choice then what can you do? If however you could amend plans to accommodate him then I wouldn't send him I don't think.

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 24/04/2014 15:08

I think it's a bit cheeky of them to phone you tbh. If you use this as childcare then it's not relevant how many are going to be there. If it's just a club like sports or music that he does for fun then I would probably go get him.

thebodydoestricks · 24/04/2014 15:09

Ah that's difficult but unless you have alternative arrangements you don't have much choice.

It's for only one day? Could be worse.

thebodydoestricks · 24/04/2014 15:10

Bit cheeky to say they will get admin jobs done!

If you are paying they should be entertaining him.

They sound very unprofessional.

HerRoyalNotness · 24/04/2014 15:22

I'd probably try other arrangements. DS1 had similar in the last school break where the first day there was only him at the club. He was not happy and was bored that day.

vickibee · 24/04/2014 15:31

He likes adult company so if they entertain him it should be fine, they have some guinea pigs which he could clean out. I feel worse for him than he does probably

If you need the childcare (which I assume you do) and have no reasonable alternative then of course you should send him.

You have booked (and paid?) and the fact that no-one else is going is irrelevant.

I think they are cheeky to ring tbh

strawberryangel · 24/04/2014 16:20

I wouldn't worry if it's only one day.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 24/04/2014 16:22

If he has to go because you have no other choices then I am sure they will do their best to care for him and keep him occupied. I think its ok that they gave you the option of cancelling, for all they know you may work from home, have loads of willing babysitters, be able to rearrange working hours etc etc and would prefer him not to be alone... just warn him though that he is the only one.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 24/04/2014 16:24

Bit cheeky to say they will get admin jobs done! depends on how many staff there are, if there are 5 or 6 then it would be a bit overwhelming for OP's Ds to have them all trying to entertain him, if however they stick him in front of a DVD and ignore him to do admin then yes that's wrong.

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 24/04/2014 16:25

I would still send him. You need the childcare, you didn't book it for the fun of it (I assume?), why should you have to find different childcare?
As long as you pay you are entitled to the care you have paid for.
I hope they do entertain him, as that is what you are paying for. It is not your fault people are sick/ have cancelled.

Lucylouby · 24/04/2014 22:30

Maybe they phoned you to let you know your ds would be the only one in case you would rather he wasn't there by himself. If you were sending him for the social size and he was the only one it would be a bit rubbish for him. My children would hate to be the only one at something like that, if I was a paying for them to go to holiday club I would expect other children to be there and I think my children would be bored without others to play with all day.

If you have no alternative and he doesn't mind being the only one, then send him, but if there is a away to change the plans, I would personally go with the alternative.

SaucyJack · 24/04/2014 22:33

Does he like the playworkers? If so, a bit of 1-2-1 might be a treat for him.

RhondaJean · 24/04/2014 22:37

I'm on the committee for our out of school club and we would open for one child but we would want Thr parent to know, sometimes parents send children for the company rather than the Childcare (my dd2 in the summer sometimes) and also, there's probably some debate about the quality of the play setting when there is only one child there but if you are happy and he is happy, then YANBU to send him.

vickibee · 25/04/2014 06:55

thanks for the replies, we have no choice but to send him, however my DH has arranged to go in a bit later so he can start at 10am and I will pick him up at 330. We cannot get time off at such short notice and no not have family babysitters so this is a sort of compromise .He likes the staff and there will only be two there
