English jobs for English people, with a backdrop of the St. George's flag.

I have no issue with the flag, just wanted to set the scene.

By someone who is know to work off the cards and therefore not paying tax.

Shouldn't it be jobs for the most willing, hardworking and tax paying?

Am I going to be flamed for this, I hope not. I am the daughter of Irish immigrants and when they came to England were often refused jobs. However, over time, the Irish labourer and building site worker, nurses and I am sure lots of other trades and vocations they did very well.

And yes, I have kicked her off my Facebook.

Charlie97 · 22/04/2014 21:24

Yes spider, I did. It was by chance it said English, the Irish thing is just an explanation.

I feel it's jobs, for hard working, willing, tax paying etc.

If you are going to give the jobs to the English first, I presume you are ok with immigrants being on benefits then? Or would you have them starve?

EverythingIsAwesome · 22/04/2014 21:28

That was to spider, not the OP.

The thing is, if we prevented immigrants from taking jobs in the UK, there are a number of areas of industry and the health service that would suffer badly and potentially collapse, and our economy would be a net loser.

Jobs should go to those who are properly qualified and skilled to do the job - no matter what someone's nationality is as long as they are willing to abide by the rules of the country and pay their taxes like everyone else who works. It's a 'survival of the fitest' mode of thinking. Children should be educated to understand that when they become adults and look for their first job, they WILL be up against other people wanting the same job and therefore need to ensure they are well educated, properly skilled and trained and the best in their field. Entry to the adult world is like this regardless of whether migrants are competing or not!!

Over the past few years, with the farce of benefits, many of todays next generation are brought up in households that teach them to not aspire to be the best because it doesn't matter. Why should it if the state bails you out with numerous benefits? We're slowly becoming a very lazy country and certainly not like the older generation who were taught that work pays. I see it day after day in school - children who can't be bothered and parents who think it doesn't matter because they're only young. Er, yes it does because without the basic grounding, they'll never achieve their full potential as they move throught the school system.

I never used to think like this, but on moving to an area of the UK where lots of Polish people reside, my opinion changed. My DH worked in an area of manufacturing where many English people refused to take on the work. The pay wasn't low paid, but it was labour intense and monotomous. The Polish migrants accepted the jobs instead.

I don't think it's true that British/English (whatever the term used!) jobs are being taken from 'natives' and given to immigrants. Rather in my experience it is because many Brits/English people expect more for less. Many reasons I have heard for Brits/English not working in the fields for local farmers or in manufacturing jobs is because of low pay.

Yes, jobs are low pay because the are manual, unskilled labour work - not something that requires years of higher education and degrees!! But it certainly isn't as low paid as they claim. i know this because Polish and other natinalities manage to work and live so why can't 'we'?
