to hate a and e?

Fuckingforriner · 22/04/2014 15:53

I'm waiting at the a and e in at the moment and I hate it.
I have a toddler who loves to scream all the time and I have everyone looking at me as if I can stop the toddler from screaming.

I've got an earache since Friday and when I tried to get to my GP today I was offered a telephone appointment. My phone rang three times and they hanged up as I was picking up the phone.

I'm in a lot of pain and when I get to the reception I found a rude woman who happen to be a nurse. I might be wrong but I noticed she was friendlier to other patients, maybe she didn't like my face, but I can't help thinking it's because I'm a fucking foreigner.

Oops didn't mean the ! Arkina.

WaitMonkey · 22/04/2014 21:38

People go to A&,E with earache ? Shock How fucking selfish. A&E is full of very ill people, it isn't the place for toddler's. Unless it's a children's A&E obviously. You username indicates you have issues with being from abroad. For your information, 99% of people don't give a shit where you happened to be born. That includes the underpaid overworked nurse who is working in an ACCIDENT AND EMERGENCY unit and having to deal with earache. Painfully though earache is, it's not an accident or an emergency. Hmm

ExitPursuedByABear · 22/04/2014 21:44

Independent thought my arse.

ExitPursuedByABear · 22/04/2014 21:45

Earache is not an emergency. In any universe.

TillyTellTale · 22/04/2014 21:50

WaitMonkey She phoned up first and was told to go in.

Exit That's a bit adamant, don't you think? Last time there was a thread on MN about this (not mine), from someone who was having problems getting a GP appointment, people were queuing up to tell ghastly tales of death from untreated ear infections!

Nicknacky · 22/04/2014 21:53

Can you even phone an A&E department? We certainly tried to find a number last month when I was ill and there wasn't one for the hospitals in my area. Or maybe it's easier in England? But then they would be fielding phone calls all day.

Hoppityhippity · 22/04/2014 22:06

Some people on here are ridiculous!

People go to A&E with bad stomach ache and no one cares so why not bad ear ache?

Never tried. Either you can, or the OP was in a rush, and meant that she called someone else who said to go to A&E, like NHS direct.

But the healthcare system is suddenly becoming really complicated. My town doesn't have a dedicated children's A&E! Where do you take ill toddlers if you don't have a dedicated A&E? Are single parents without childcare forbidden to go to hospital?

ouryve · 22/04/2014 22:11

Has the OP been seen yet?

Is her toddler still screaming?

Sirzy · 22/04/2014 22:12

Nobody has denied that ear infections can be serious but the vast majority of them aren't. As the op was happy to phone the GP and wait for the call I am guessing she didn't think hers was serious but just didn't want to have to travel to the walk in centre which she said was too far away - that isn't a reason to go to a and e.

A common cold can be fatal for some but it doesn't justify everyone going to a and e with a cold!

TillyTellTale · 22/04/2014 22:13

Fab ah, that was one of the possible consequences posted on that Mumsnet thread! Someone posted about witnessing her neighbour being taken to hospital in an ambulance, burbling nonsense. It turned out he'd had an ear infection and it had progressed to attacking his brain.

Tiggywinklespinny · 22/04/2014 22:15

I love this, enter the UK use our healthcare then tell everyone how much you hate it.

You might be in a great deal of pain but A&E are probably understaffed and dealing with real emergencies. It's boring but wait your turn and be thankful you've got an A&E dept you can go to and get free healthcare.

Nicknacky · 22/04/2014 22:16

We don't have a dedicated A&E for children. It's its a side room in the main section.

Fab. Mine was serious. Without exaggeration I was worried for my well being but I still used the other services and received the same result without tying up A&E.

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 22/04/2014 22:19

Yes if you dare to state when you think someone is misusing a&e you are jumping on the bandwagon and incapable of independent thought. Of course.
Chickenpox can have disastrous consequences for some let's not all rush to a&e just in case eh?

Gurnie · 22/04/2014 22:20

I think the op has said a couple of times that she called a and e and was told to come in. Please stop telling her that she shouldn't have gone when she was advised to do so. I was once advised to go to A and E by my dentist out of hours due to a toothache which turned out to be a hideous infection which kept me in hospital for 5 days. On the face of it many people would say that going to a and e with a toothache was ridiculous but it isn't necessarily.

I hope you are ok Op and that you have been seen and got some help and pain relief.

Nicknacky · 22/04/2014 22:22

Gurnie, you don't have to go through a&e to be admitted. The point is she hasn't used any other services, just went there. Where do you draw the line?

Gurnie · 22/04/2014 22:22

Yes, you can phone and a and e department.

TillyTellTale · 22/04/2014 22:22

Are we all on the same thread here? Or am I reading a version from a parallel dimension?

Gurnie · 22/04/2014 22:22

She called them and they told her to come, that is what she said twice.

Nicknacky · 22/04/2014 22:23

Maybe hospitals are different across the country, you can't phone my local one. Could phone the main switchboard but doubt they would transfer for a query.

Nicknacky · 22/04/2014 22:24

What do you mean, Tilly?

Sirzy · 22/04/2014 22:24

Unless she spoke to a medical proffessional though then having phoned a and e doesn't mean a thing!

IamInvisible · 22/04/2014 22:26

I highly doubt that the OP was told to go to A&E with an earache, tbh. There are big drives across the country to get the number of people attending A&E down, especially ones who attend with conditions which could be dealt with elsewhere.
