WIBU to go for this job?

I've posted before about my work, I work in a bar where I'm working as an assistant manager but on the pay of a supervisor because the unit is too small to allow for two salaries.

I'm currently halfway through the management training programe with the company which you need to complete before you can get a managers position. This will be completed in November/December

However...

Managers are moving about just now and a small hint is going to be soon advertising a mangers vacancy. It's a lovely wee pub, has it's regulars, practically runs itself, basically the perfect first manager position for an assistant manager to move up into.

I'm thinking about having a word with my area manager about it, and ask if I can apply for it, but that I would do it on an assistant managers salary rather than the managers until I completed my course. The pub is also only 2 blocks away from the pub I'm in now, so my current manager would be very close by and would be able to offer support.

I'm currently thinking to worth a shot, if you don't ask you don't get, but worried that I'll just look daft and that it's stupid to even ask.

WIBU to apply for the position?

Ok, I won't ask but I will talk to my manager about it.

How would I word it? Need to plan in case I slip into asking rather than telling. How about 'I am wanting to apply for the position in x bar, how best should I go about this?'

Yes! Something along those lines.

I am applying for X position. I wondered if you had any insight as to how seriously my application would be taken, given my current position?

Is there anything I should focus on? Any strengths you think I should be sure to outline?

He is your line manager and is there to support you, and anyone else under him who may be applying. He should be able to help, he should be happy to help!

Agree - definitely say "I am applying for the job" rather than making it sound like a question or request for permission.

Go for it ,personally I wouldn't do it got less money as you should ask for what you feel you deserve as you will still be doing the sane job as someone fully qualified

How about, "I know this is coming up, and I would be a good candidate for it. The only problem is that currently I'm working as an assistant manger but being called a supervisor, is there any reason why I can't call my self 'acting assistant manager?'"

That way they have to think of a way to say no, with you giving the reasons to say yes already formed within the question.

Then say something like, "I assume you'll be able to give me a reference, you would be the normal person for that, wouldn't you?" Again - you're pointing out why they should agree with you, rather than any hint that they could disagree.

Kickass, I like your wording, good idea to basically frame it as a given, because my attitude should be that it should be a given because I'm obviously the best candidate for the job :)

And do NOT mention the salary thing at all.

If it gets as far as interview, and they say they'd love to give you the job, but are concerned about other managers thinking you're not yet qualified, that is the time to mention, not before. Only if they start hinting that they want some kind of compromise should you offer one. Otherwise, consider yourself as good as any other candidate, and on an equal footing.

Before interview, you'll either be in or out anyway, whatever you've said informally beforehand.

If you're ambitious and want to build this into a career, then you need to signal that to the higher managers. Even if they don't consider you for this post, they will know that you intend to move onwards and upwards.

I'm actually a bit nervous about this now. Excited nervous though! I really hope the managers move in the way I'm expecting them to, I'm still banking on the current manager to be getting another job, which has just been advertised now.
