to provide unhealthy party food at my daughter's party

dd had her birthday party. I gave each child a small bag of animal biscuits, pack of crisps, raisens, a babybel. I also put out plates of strawberries, cucumber, grapes, sausages and sausage rolls. Unsurprisingly the children ate all the sweet unhealthy stuff, the strawberries were popular, but very few children wanted the grapes or cucumber or raisens.

One of the parents was pissed off that her daughter ate loads of chocolate and crisps and didn't touch the fruit. I feel its unrealistic to not have unhealthy foods at a children's party. I am not prepared to force feed a child fruit at a birthday party.

Isn't that what parties are about?

minniebar · 20/04/2014 22:28

Fruit has quite a lot of sugar in it anyway. But the main point is… it's a party FFS! That parent is in for a hell of a shock.

Delphiniumsblue · 20/04/2014 22:28

How old is your DD?

HolidayCriminal · 20/04/2014 22:28

phfaw, I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when angry parent had a go at you. Is she often good value entertainment? I love ppl with "unusual" ideas.

YANBU, in case you think i haven't been clear!

ChazzerChaser · 20/04/2014 22:30

Depends on the age for me.

littledrummergirl · 20/04/2014 22:30

Ywbu not to provide unhealthy snacks at a party. Thats part of the experience imo.

Giraffeski · 20/04/2014 22:31

I bet that parent restricts chocolate and crisps etc so much that her DD went mad when faced with freedom!

We've all had our PFB moments, she'll learn Wink

Floggingmolly · 20/04/2014 22:31

Of course you weren't. There's nothing more depressing than "worthy" food at a kid's party, and it's almost never touched.
Did the mum think it you should have policed what the children ate? Hmm. She's nuts, poor cow.

And your spread sounds great.

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 20/04/2014 22:31

Sounds ace, hope there were party rings, my fave.

fuzzpig · 20/04/2014 22:32

YANBU, what you served is standard children's party food!

RuthlessBaggage · 20/04/2014 22:32

I'm on the fence. I provide nutritious food first, and bring out biscuits/sweets/cake ten minutes later, so they don't only eat crap.

I don't mind if mine eat cake and sweets if they've also had a ham sandwich and a handful of cherry tomatoes.

WorraLiberty · 20/04/2014 22:33

YANBU, if the parent was pissed off at what her DD chose to eat then that's a 'problem' for her to sort out with her.

It's nothing to do with you.

ReallyTired · 20/04/2014 22:34

"How old is your DD?"

My daughter is five.

I chose to put the unhealthy food in little boxes so that each child got some chocolate biscuits, a packet of crisps, a babybel as they are popular items. I didn't want some greedy sod eating all the chocolate biscuits. I stupidly thought that giving each child a small quanity of unhealthy stuff was a good idea as it meant that no child ate enough chocolate to get sick.

Most children have a sugar rush at a birthday party. Its not a normal meal. The children did have an hour of gymnastics to burn off the excess calories.

Just had my DD's 3rd birthday yesterday. We did sandwiches, organix crisps, babybel, grapes and a teddy bear cake thing. Not surprisingly there were lots of grapes and sandwiches left over! We also brought out chicken nuggets and sausage rolls which went down a storm. BBQ for the adults.
I remember being all pious when DD was 1 and 2... To the extent that I made her a sugar free, gluten free, dairy free courgette cake Confused.... Oh how times change. Thing is- birthdays are special occasions... And what with it being Easter there was an egg hunt as well. Oh well!!! I would say YANBU and it's pretty much expected.

I would ignore the upset mother. Your food sounds normal.

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 20/04/2014 22:36

50p! Bargain. God I miss party food now my kids are older.

ChazzerChaser · 20/04/2014 22:38

At 5 yes YANBU.

ReallyTired · 20/04/2014 22:39

"I don't mind if mine eat cake and sweets if they've also had a ham sandwich and a handful of cherry tomatoes."

I did have some ham and cheese sandwiches, but only the parents who were staying ate them. I didn't have cherry tomartoes as many years ago when my son had a party they went completely untouched.

As a party host there is nothing you can do to force the children to eat the healthy food on offer. I am not going to say to a child you must eat your cherry tomartoes before you get your cake as I want the children to enjoy the party.

When my daughter goes to a party I make sure she has some healthy food before hand. I don't expect her to nibble on cucumber when lots of sugary treats are on offer.

I still eat Party Rings! (My 22-year -old daughter forces me to buy them!)

thornrose · 20/04/2014 22:40

The parent is responsible for teaching her child to make healthy choices surely? Wink

or what Giraffeski said

blackandwhiteandredallover · 20/04/2014 22:42

we did hot dogs and crisps at DD's recent party. There were a couple who didn't like hot dogs so they had tomato sauce in a roll Blush

Everyone had a great time!

RubyReins · 20/04/2014 22:43

Worthy food at kids' parties makes my eyes roll. What's wrong with a sausage roll and a few crisps? I've been at too many of these parties and the parental hand wringing is tiresome not to mention hypocritical as it's always the parents that grab a sly handful of the crisps whilst the weans run about...

I was at a work breakfast event recently where worthy food is generally served; an esteemed colleague, on viewing the plates of scones and bacon rolls that had been provided said "thank fuck it's proper food, I couldn't handle any more carrots and hummus" Easter Grin

RedSoloCup · 20/04/2014 22:44

I tell my kids to eat whatever they want at parties, it's a party!!! Seriously....
