getting very annoyed at parents and children playing in the dedicated swimming lanes

This lunchtime I went for a quick swim in my lunchour.

Being half term it was very busy as you would expect.

However what really really bugged me is a couple of adults and children going into the 25% of the pool that is roped off for lane swimming. This made it difficult to do lengths.

When I take children to the pool, I would be embarrassed if they wondered into these lanes, however these skinhead dads with chunky Elisabeth duke chains encouraged it.

The life guides were teenagers and looked too scared to do anything.

Complain to the attendants and their manager if they won't do anything.

YANBU. We have lane swimming in the evening, and lately there have been a couple of girls who think it's really funny to mess about, getting in people's way who are trying to do their lane swimming, me included.

I've gone as far as shitty looks, and I think they kind of get it now.

Have a Biscuit for skinhead and chains comment

Other than that, yes annoying. Take it up with the reception

Ahhh the 'mememememe' culture strikes again. 'I want to swim where I like therefore I shall'.

Last time I took DS swimming he was training for the school squads, so butterflying up and down one of the 2 lanes available for swimming. There was a lane plus the steps area cordoned off for 'family swim'. We were dodging flying floatables and having to stop and start for little kiddies swimming widths of the pool.

One cheeky dad even asked us to move from the end of the pool when we paused after a length and I was giving DS some tips - he wanted little bubba to jump in right where we were (not the family lane).

Little bubba didn't want to jump in. Little bubba was eventually lured/pulled in and screamed blue murder. Cheeky dad got fed up and left.

At my place the attendants are really young. They sit there ignoring everything - I bet they don't get any training in dealing with difficult people/issues.

YANBU

If the lifeguards aren't dealing with it, they should be.
It's part of their job.
Speak to the reception/ duty manager.

ThatBloodyWoman · 16/04/2014 16:42

Fwiw, being really young has nothing whatsoever to do with their ability.....

They may be a little 'unforthcoming' when it comes to dealing with difficult peopke, but if they can pull you out if you are drowning, age doesn't matter.......

Swimming in the school holidays is horrible. No roped off lanes at our pool though.

We get the goggles and swimming hat torpedo people ploughing through the family swim people. Sad

My two don't bother going any more.

nicename · 16/04/2014 16:47

Where we swim now there's one lane for lessons and the rest of the pool is split into 2 widthwise on Saturdays.

The shallow end is supposedly for families and the deep one for swimmers. Sadly the deep end is full of gangs of lads who divedomb into the pool, chase each other, splash like mad and basically can't swim very well. I feel sorry for the regular swimmers who have to dodge these boys.

The life guards sometimes say something but get fed up with the 'Who, Me? It wasn't me! Whadd-I-do? I didn't do nuffink. You can't tell me to get out. I have a ticket...'

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 16/04/2014 16:49

Where I swim there are three lanes (Fast/Middle/Slow)
If you wander into the 'wrong' lane you get mowed down.

ThatBloodyWoman · 16/04/2014 16:54

It's up to pool management to back up their lifeguards.
If they aren't doing so I can understand lifeguards being reluctant to tackle people.

WestieMamma · 16/04/2014 17:12

Are you sure they knew they weren't supposed to be there. While it may seem blindingly obvious to you, some people (Blush ) don't realise that the ropes are not just still there from earlier swimming lessons. In fact they can get into their late 30s before it's pointed out to them (Blush ).
