tipping

I know it's a tricky one, but tipping is bothering me. In the past I used to tip freely, even if I thought the service was just average. However, now I'm a single parent and pay childcare etc I realise some of the people I may be expected to tip earn more than me per hour (I work in an office, no tips there).

It's not a sob story, but I went to get ny haircut today and paid £50 for the privilege which I think is average in London. I was fairly happy with the cut but got the distinct impression the stylist was hankering for a tip at the end (overly friendly, complimentary etc).

Surely if I've paid that price a tip should not be necessary? I know the salon has overheads etc but the 'senior stylist' must be on more than minimum wage? Do other people tip in these situations? I feel a bit awkward to go back to the salon having not tipped plus hairdressers never like my three months between trips as I can't afford their six weekly cut recommendations

Aibu to return to a salon where I haven't tipped?

I don't approve of tipping - I think people should provide good service for the sake of it, not in expectation of a tip (and I say this as someone who worked as a waitress and enjoyed receiving tips). The whole principle is wrong.

jay55 · 16/04/2014 07:59

I tip sporadically at the hairdressers depending how rushed I feel they were. I hate going to the salon it's all awkward and so When they start hankering for tips I tend to change salons(or go without for a year).

FakeItUntilYouCakeIt · 16/04/2014 08:04

Tipping has definitely changed.
As a teen I worked in cafes and tea shops, tips were good.
Now I work in a much nicer independent coffee shop and tips are few and far between!

lottieandmia · 16/04/2014 08:11

I don't tip in the hairdressers any more because it sets a precedent and sometimes I can't afford it. I'm a beauty therapist and the only thing people tend to tip for is massage treatments IME.

What I do instead is buy products recommended by my hairdresser if I need them. Then I assume she'll get the commission.

lottieandmia · 16/04/2014 08:12

I know a restaurant where 15% is automatically added to the bill as service charge. I think it's an absolute cheek.

Atbeckandcall · 16/04/2014 08:17

I only ever tip the trainee if she has washed my hair and made me drinks whilst I've been getting my hair done. They are on minimum wage and the one in my salon is fantastic.

In restaurant I will only tip if they have actually given good service. If they have just done the basics, well, that's what their wage covers.

TKKW · 16/04/2014 08:24

I don't like to tip and feel guilty when out with DH or friends when I say that i'm not going to. When friends or DH only tip a couple of pound each, I still feel annoyed that I have to join in and would rather put those couple of pounds in DC's money boxes.

I suppose i feel this way because after tax, nat ins and childcare, I earn £1-2 per hour net. I always think "why the hell should I... no-one tips me for doing my job". Sorry but given my financial circumstances, i try to avoid tipping when i can.

BoneyMan · 16/04/2014 08:24

I'd love to know where in London £50 is average. Bargain!

londonrach · 16/04/2014 08:25

I hate tipping. Lack of money being the main reason. Mind you if I go to hairdressers I do give her £10 rather than the £9 she asks for in my parents Somerset village as known her for years, she cuts the hair really we'll and it costs me £25 in London if I get it down. Mind you I only get it cut every so often if money allows. I don't tip the one in London as £25 is a lot of money for a hair cut. I work in the nhs and we do occasionally get given a box of chocs or biscuits or in the case of one lady a fruit platter. It's taken into the office and shared and eaten by all staff coming and going. We always remember who gives them but treat everyone the same. When we busy treating sometimes it's the only food we have time to eat. Last autumn I had patients giving me apples from their trees which made amazing eve puddings. The best tip I get about from the amazing stories is advice from the patients. I even got one chap write me a poem which I love.

£25 hair masters Kingston upon Thames for the person asking re where hair cuts in London. They give out vouchers when you walk past. Think all hair masters do it.

CuChullain · 16/04/2014 08:56

In restaurants, if service charge has already been added to the bill then no, I don’t tip. On a few occasions when the service has been shite I have asked to have it removed which always seems to cause a huge fuss. My barber shop charges £9 for a cut, I usually just give him a tenner. I find it unreal how much some women spend on their hair and how in some cases they feel morally obligated to tip on top of that. Insane!

HugoTheHippo · 16/04/2014 09:07

I only tip my stylist at Christmas. Like yours, she's a senior stylist at a Central London salon - I pay enough already! I've been going for years - she's still really nice to me and does a great job.

Nohootingchickenssleeping · 16/04/2014 09:12

I went to a restaurant last year and when we asked for mayo and ketchup, the waitress left them on the floor next to the table! My face was like this: Shock

When they added a service charge I asked for it to be removed. Bloody DP still left a cash tip though.

RunnerBeen · 16/04/2014 09:13

Yanbu. I stopped tipping in most places about two years ago, like you i'm a single mum on minimum wage and if i'm paying for lunch out, or a haircut then the person bringing me lunch and cutting my hair is at least getting the same pay as me or more.

i work behind a counter in a grocery store, i go well out of my way to help customers and am always pleasant and polite but no-one tips me. I don't see why waitresses, taxi drivers and hairdressers are usually tipped as par for the course but people in shops etc are not.

LyndaCartersBigPants · 16/04/2014 09:16

I hate tipping. I don't mind rounding up to save hanging around for change, but last time I was in Wagamama and they took aaaaages to bring the change (£8 from £40) so I was even more resentful about leaving anything as it seemed like they expected to keep it all.

In the end I left the £3 as there was no way I was leaving them the £5 after they'd blatantly tried to nab it all, but I wasn't really happy about leaving a tip at all, the did barely anything, one course, forgot drinks etc.

In Egypt we were told that to get good service we should start with big tips. Bugger that, the surly bastards didn't get a tip UNTIL they did something tip-worthy, not before.

Pipbin · 16/04/2014 11:02

I only tip in a restaurant. I feel like an arse tipping the hairdresser etc. It's like 'I'm rich you poor little thing, have an extra couple of my pounds, I have loads of them'.

However, a word of warning, be careful if you eat in a Giraffe restaurant. They automatically add a 10% tip to your bill unless you ask them to remove it.

SlimJiminy · 16/04/2014 11:32

I don't tip in the hairdressers and have never heard of people doing this. Didn't realise it was a thing. I only tip in restaurants when the standard of service is over and above what I expect. Yes, that does mean service with a smile.

HappyAsEyeAm · 16/04/2014 11:48

I always tip - takeaway delivery person (1 generally), hairdresser (about 5%), taxi drivers (maybe 1 or so for journyeys under 10, 2 for journeys above 10), waiters/waitresses (about 10%). I also leave a tip for chambermaids when we've stayed in a hotel. I add 5 or so to a treatment whenever (and it is very rare) I have a treatment at a spa. Service would have to be dire or me not to tip.

I do this because I can afford to. If I couldn't afford to, I wouldn't.

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 16/04/2014 12:09

£50? £25? I live in Islington and look out for hairdressers advertising for models for students - always get great cut and usually free.
