sorry but i am sitting in the 'spoons at the moment and right in front of me is a family whose table manners are making me feel ill!!
the mum and dad are holding their knives and forks like pens and sticking out their tongues to meet the food.
the son is is just stabbing at say a sausage with a fork and then holding it up to take bites out of, alternated with putting his face down to the plate to hoove up peas and insert the knife into his mouth. He is about 18 at least.
the daughter is eating chips in quite a normal fashion however. no! she is stabbing at them with a wooden skewer!
am i being snobby about the knife and fork holding?
should i give a toss anyway? it IS in public though!

and witch I think you need to think again also.

I didn't see your post last time.

Bonsoir · 14/04/2014 18:23

Feminine - in France a graphotherapeute would address both your son's issues.

MelonadeAgain · 14/04/2014 18:41

I once ate in a diner type restaurant where the 16 yo or so looking son of the family was eating pancakes with maple syrup and fresh cream with his fingers...(judging by his conversation no SN, just an inability to use utensils).

MelonadeAgain · 14/04/2014 18:42

It was in America and it was a Denny's. Not sure if that makes any difference.

I'd assume that a whole family had bad table manners before I would assume they all had SN.

FourForksAche · 14/04/2014 18:54

Could someone explain the pen-cutlery thing please? I can't really picture it.

Saski · 14/04/2014 18:56

I think it means grasping it with all fingers rather than using your pointy fingers to guide.

ah, looks a bit like trying to hold chopsticks, yes, it does look a bit odd. Thanks guys.

Saski · 14/04/2014 19:00

Oh, not like what I described. What would that accomplish in terms of moving food around?

happybubblebrain · 14/04/2014 19:00

I do real pig snorts when I'm eating.
You'd love me.

FourForksAche · 14/04/2014 19:01

I guess it'd be a scooping motion, you can't cut like that.

tracypenisbeaker · 14/04/2014 19:03

Happ

tracypenisbeaker · 14/04/2014 19:05

*happybubble, if you are aware of it, why do you do it may I ask? Sorry if you have an adenoid problem or something

happybubblebrain · 14/04/2014 19:06

I just like to do it for fun. I love it when people stare at me in restaurants.

MrsSteptoe · 14/04/2014 19:07

Yes, chopsticks is a good way of describing the HKLP horror. Handle protrudes up from gap between thumb and index finger side of palm, thus resting on the thumb, rather than being nestled in and gripped by the underside (palmside) of the hand. In both cases, however, index finger extends along the topside of the knife towards the plate.

I get stabby at DH eating crisps! One small bag takes him ages and the rustling of the bag and the crunching drives me mad! He has otherwise good manners.
DC all have good table manners...they didn't dare eat badly when they were young! I asked them once to eat nicely if they forgot..after that I removed the plate! Never an issue past toddlerhood.
