Top two stories on Talk Roundup this week are:

  1. husband using tampons to apply cream to internal piles
  2. will the nurse/midwife be scared of my hairy muff

If I was interested in schoolboy humour I would subscribe to Viz, thanks hq.

That's a bit harsh AF.
Surely comment is allowed isn't it? Same as for all other aspects of the site.

I certainly don't think the roundup is always bad, or whoever does it (is it still Aitch, I don't think it is, is it?) is stupid. It's certainly not personal.

I just agree that those weren't a great choice and that it's a bit cringey to think they were the most entertaining/noteworthy threads of the week that's all.

StairsInTheNight · 13/04/2014 18:12

I imagine it is a huge task.

I wish we could nominate threads for the round up- there have been a few crackers lately.

OwlCapone · 13/04/2014 18:13

Doesn't the Round Up simply materialise out of thin air and gin fumes? Someone compiles it you say...?. Well I never, who'd have thought?!

RandallFloyd · 13/04/2014 18:13

That said, you're also entitled to post your opinions about our opinions.
Otherwise MN would be a bit defunct!

Sparklingbrook · 13/04/2014 18:16

If you are the one compiling the Round Up I think there is a job requirement to not care if it's not to everyone's liking.

PortofinoRevisited · 13/04/2014 18:19

Round up has definitely gone down hill though.

Lomaamina · 13/04/2014 18:21

I unsubscribed ages (years) ago as the roundup didn't reflect my interests at all and especially because of its focus on unsavoury subjects.

Lomaamina · 13/04/2014 18:21

... And I see there's no reason to return!

AnyFucker · 13/04/2014 18:23

I don't think what I said was harsh

It was just a gentle reminder, take it or leave it

I remember this happening with the previous arbiter of the Round Up

It's a bit of a thankless task, tbh

and it's a bit more pointed a criticism as it is about a specific task that (AFAIK) a specific individual is responsible for as opposed to being a bit sick of a general ethos (which I agree with...the dumbing down of MN is getting on my wick too)

Sparklingbrook · 13/04/2014 18:25

I certainly didn't mean anything pointed or personal. I merely agreed with Mintyy that this week I didn't like the content of the Round Up.

Is there any need for a Round Up any more? What is it's purpose?

PortofinoRevisited · 13/04/2014 18:26

Agree with AF. There was actually an intelligently debated thread going on today. That never used to be a novelty.

FourForksAche · 13/04/2014 18:26

I think it says more about the way this week has been than it does about whoever puts the roundup together, it's been your usual holiday weirdness.

piscivorous · 13/04/2014 18:27

It's just the feeling that MN is pandering to the lowest common denominator that is concerning.

I'm not highbrow or even expecting the site to stay the same forever but it does feel lately as though there is some nudging in a particular direction going on from MNHQ. Rather like Tony Blair nudged the Labour Party to the right to compete with the Tories, I suspect we might be being nudged towards the demographic for netmums. Don't want to look too clever or middle class.

CuntyBunty · 13/04/2014 18:30

Actually, I don't think the round up is that democratic. MNHQ must compile it because I've seen several popular threads not make the round up. I don't know whether it's good or bad really, but I'm glad that the ones which treat high profile crimes like a delicious murder mystery don't really appear. Give me pubes any day, so to speak.
I haven't seen the past couple of weeks talk round ups (lost my job and my work e-mail with it, beach haaaa), but am I correct in thinking things involving court cases don't appear? Hope not.

RandallFloyd · 13/04/2014 18:39

I do get what you're saying AF but as I said, I certainly didn't intend it to be personal. I can totally see how it could be a thankless task. There's no way to please all the people all the time after all.

I just disagree that pubes were the most interesting thread of the week that's all. Although I completely agree that there certainly isn't much to chose from atm.

Tbh I don't think it should be an MNer that does it. I think it should be HQ's job. I think it's a bit of crappy job to delegate.

Unless they pay whoever does it of course, but that would then make it a job and therefore open to criticism I suppose.

I dunno, I'm waffling again.

CuntyBunty · 13/04/2014 18:42

What I meant, Randall, when I said I didn't think it was democratic, was that it obviously wasn't done on numbers of posts, which would be logical.

BIWI · 13/04/2014 18:45

I think that Aitch, who compiles and writes it every week (so there is a person behind the thing you're commenting on) is only allowed to use 'humorous' threads.

I know she's found it increasingly difficult to find appropriate threads over recent months. Perhaps reflecting the downward drift of the site?

It's a bit of a thankless task, I think

Sparklingbrook · 13/04/2014 18:47

There must be weeks where she struggles to find anything at all. Sad I would ask MHHQ to take over.

Floer1 · 13/04/2014 18:49

Last I recall it was a paid position? So not thankless.

There's always trouble if anybody tries to critique the round up. I recently resubscribed but am not impressed.

RandallFloyd · 13/04/2014 18:52

I didn't think Aitch still did it. Blimey, if I was her I'd have given it up a long time ago. Does she really have 'rules' about what she can choose?

That's not right. If she's going to be expected to put her name to it then she should be able to chose the content IMO.

HQ can't have it both ways. If they want to control it they should write it.

Sparklingbrook · 13/04/2014 18:54

A little bit off subject but still connected. Why is the weekly email thing called 'Parenting News'? Not all posters are parents. Mind you, I have unsubscribed from that.

BIWI · 13/04/2014 18:58

I'm assuming Aitch still does it - I haven't had it for weeks now, for some reason. But I haven't missed it, which speaks volumes ...

RandallFloyd · 13/04/2014 18:58

In all honesty I don't see them anymore.
Since gmail did the last update where they started that primary/promotions business most MN emails seem to end up in my spam Confused

Mintyy · 13/04/2014 19:46

I don't think Aitch still does it? This is the first one I have clicked on for ages and it doesn't have the sign off Aitch at the bottom - or at least I don't think it does, I might have given up before scrolling all the way down.

I am going to continue to give HQ my honest opinions on their site until they ban me, tbh. It all comes from a good place (my heart) and I agree 100% with what piscivorous said.
