to think the blurb on the back of the book should not give away major plot points

Major bugbear of mine atm.

Like lots of people I like to read the blurb at the back of a book to see if it's something that I might enjoy.

However there seems to be a growing trend to include major plot points on the back. I don't want a summary - I just want a general idea about the story/type of book.

AIBU to think that (say) something that happens in the 2nd half of the book (particularly if it is unexpected) should not feature on the blurb and completely spoil the story?

No! I've never noticed that before. That would really piss me off. Which books have you seen that do that?

I avoid reading the snippets of reviews they sometimes put on the first few pages and any foreword to a classic novel that I've never read for that reason.

I always go back and read the foreword but at least I know not to read it first. Plus it's there for a good reason.

I always read the last page to see how it ends before I read a book. I always google film endings to see what they are before watching.

I hate surprises

I know.

Yes,I agree,it is really annoying. I also read one a few months ago that had a comment on the front cover underneath the title - "Don't believe a word she says!" As the storyline was not dissimilar to Gone Girl, it was a bit of a spoiler.

I never read the back of the book - ever! I only go by recommendations or the author.

YANBU.

Don't even get me started on movie trailers that show you THE WHOLE ENTIRE MOVIE.

thebody!! Are you me? Grin

I do that too! DP thinks I'm barmy! I always know what happens before it happens. .

On the whole I agree with you OP, but if it's a novel based on historical events, the reader may well know major plot spoilers anyway.
I find this a lot as I like historical fiction, but it doesn't bother me.

I would hate it, say, for the Game of Thrones series, HATE it!!

bobberdobber · 08/04/2014 16:49

thebody I do that too!!

Only, I'm probably worse because if I don't like how it ends, I don't bother reading the rest Blush

But if it's for tv or the like, I avoid spoilers like the plague so I guess YANBU OP
