to not understand why people go to Aldi & Lidl...

… it's such a horrible shopping experience.

It reminded me of being in a co-op in my very small hometown circa 1977. And then when you've got a trolley full of their stuff and queue up to pay there's that humiliating bit at the end where they don't give you sufficient time to pack your groceries. They just expect you to very quickly remove your groceries and go and pack them elsewhere, with no bags.

I feel assaulted.

Can you please tell me

  1. how far away is your Aldi or Lidl & why do you go?

  2. what do you miss about your old supermarket? (which one was it)

  3. how much do you spend there each time you go

It was cheaper than my normal shopping but actually I didn't buy my normal shopping: no fresh chives, no fresh ginger, no butternut squash, no purple sprouting broccoli, no green peppercorns, no little tubs of anchovies & olives from the Waitrose deli. I travelled much further to get there.

And there's no delivery.

Why why why?

DD complains there's no atmosphere :)

But then she's 10 and not paying.

Wherediparkmybroom · 07/04/2014 14:08

I'm just biased against tesco ds and I had to eat cheap, the shop now gives me the horrors our morrisons has funny lights by the time I do the first aisle I feel sick as a dog...every time!

Chippednailvarnish · 07/04/2014 14:09

I suspect you're living in a parallel universe if a bad shopping "experience" leaves you feeling like this.

Maybe you should do some time volunteering in a food bank, you might learn something (mainly about yourself).

TheBeautifulVisit · 07/04/2014 14:09

Oh and do you get dressed, or just go in your onesie?

WHy?

Because it's cheaper, the products are usually good and the things that aren't I avoid, I can get around the shop and out with a weeks shop in less than 30 minutes.

I don't have the time or the spare cash to need a 'shopping experience'. I just want to buy food.

TeaOneSugar · 07/04/2014 14:10

Primark onesie with bunny ears.

BlackeyedSusan · 07/04/2014 14:12

you do not have to pack quickly. you pack at your own speed on the specially provided bench next to the lovely warm radiators. you can buy bags if you want... but bringing your own ios more environmentally friendly.

it is cheaper than other supermarkets.

NigellasDealer · 07/04/2014 14:12

Oh and do you get dressed, or just go in your onesie
what is a onesie?
I go in a stained dressing gown and fluffy slippers .
I did try to have a fag butt in my mouth, but security stopped me.
I was gutted.

Wherediparkmybroom · 07/04/2014 14:15

Roll ups nigella! You chip em and shove em in your pocket for later!

gordyslovesheep · 07/04/2014 14:15

I tend to go in my work clothes due to doing the weekly shop after work Hmm

feckawwf · 07/04/2014 14:16

I hate it too, I'm honestly not a snob but I find they have very little variety, I dont rate the freshness of the fruit, veg and meat either. Happy to go there for cheap pop, loo roll, biscuits but only if I'm passing otherwise I will stick go my usual supermarket.

NigellasDealer · 07/04/2014 14:17

good tip, broom, i will bear it in mind Grin

AfricanExport · 07/04/2014 14:18

I think Aldi is fantastic.

It is further way than Tesco and Sainsburys but I get what I can there at a decent price. If there is anything else we go to the bigger supermarkets.

The chocolate at Aldi is so good. Their meat is way better than Tescos anyway. Never had an issue with their veg etc.

And you get random deals on completely arbitrary things like tyres and snow boots. Grin

Shopping bags. I get organised. its probably the only time I am organised Wink . But we unpack everything onto the till conveyor belt (heavy things first) and have 3 large sports direct bags which we open and place in the trolley. One for dry goods. One for cold goods and one for everything else. And we just toss things into the correct bag as we go, instead of randomly into the trolley. It works for us.

Aeroflotgirl · 07/04/2014 14:19

Because it's cheap and tge price of otter supermarkets is through tge roof doh.

Dawndonnaagain · 07/04/2014 14:20

The meat is amazing at Aldi, far better quality than Tesco or Morrisons (both nearer to me). As for packing, two trollies, lined with bags. Easy.

Impatientismymiddlename · 07/04/2014 14:22

Oh and do you get dressed, or just go in your onesie?

I just go in my primark bra, panties and fake ugg boots. I don't bother buying clothes as I can't be arsed washing them. Even washing my smalls is a huge effort Grin.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 07/04/2014 14:23

I shop in Iceland, thats lower class than Lidl/Aldi right.

Poor single mum just trying to feed her child.

Oh dear, I seem to have run out of foster and bensons.

Must pop out to the Co op.

Scholes34 · 07/04/2014 14:25

Having your shopping delivered by Waitrose is the way to go. Have shopped there recently and found the customers to be very rude and pushy. Staff are lovely - DC1 works there and often has fingers clicked at her to attract her attention behind the counter.

Aldi is fab for fruit juice cartons, olive oil, parmesan, jam, cooked meats, beer, wine, detergent, dishwasher tabs. Don't tend to do a weekly shop there - it's a bulk shop of particular items once a month.

whatsbehindthegreendoor · 07/04/2014 14:25

I'm a supermarket addict. However, generally, we go to Sainsbury's, Tesco or Asda. However, we often venture into Aldi because of the random stuff they sell - like the goods they have on offer every Thursday etc. Aldi also do a great selection of continental meats that are often cheaper and nicer quality than the 'main' supermarkets.
Have to admit though, if Aldi was the only supermarket locally, I'd be doing most of my shopping online - they just don't have a big enough selection for me and in our local Aldi, every time we've bought fruit and veg, it has gone bad very quickly.

Rupeomatic · 07/04/2014 14:28

We like the food from Aldi and we save at least £100 a month in comparison with Tescos. Simple as that.

ThefutureMrsTatum · 07/04/2014 14:29

I don't think it's true at all that "poorer" people shop at aldi and lidl, I think people who are smart with money, whether that be a little or a lot, do. In fact, two new aldi's have opened in our area lately and they are both located slap bang in the middle of very affluent areas.

Fairylea · 07/04/2014 14:29

It's cheaper. It's not packed with a billion non food items like dvds, clothes and books and games that I usually waste loads of money on so I save there too.

Nappies and wipes are so much cheaper and the only ones that don't give ds a rash.

Our aldi is 18 miles away but even with the £7 petrol money factored in I still save week on week as opposed to the 5 minutes walk tesco is from me. Says a lot really.

Theas18 · 07/04/2014 14:30

Love my aldi!

It's very near, the staff are always the same and say hi, it's cheap and I can do a full trolley load ( over a weeks food) for £50-60 in 20 mins.

What's not to like?

Recently visited a waitrose and found it depressing tbh! Maybe I wasn't in the right middle class frame of mind but picking up every day items going " how much! Your joking" and putting thrm back was no fun.

We have a shiny new sainsburys. Went to do some " posh" shopping for my mum (West Country dairy full fat yoghurts etc) as she's eating nearly nothing and dropped £50 on stuff I could carry in 4 ordinary carrier bags. That was sickening. I did it to try to tempt my mum with " treat food" .hope she doesn't give it away...

TeacupDrama · 07/04/2014 14:32

aldi is actually 17 miles away but its where i work the stuff is much cheaper and better than asda where I used to shop, I now shop at Aldi for most stuff/ frozen food at farm foods and the delicious bits at Waitrose and local butchers altogether spending less than when did huge shop at asda
generally aldi quality better than normal asda

do not know about lidl as 55 mile round trip so would not be worth it

LizLemonOut · 07/04/2014 14:36

You should bring your own reusable bags, not get new ones every time. Surely Waitrose do some nice organic jute ones? Very odd. I go to Aldi because I'm very poor and I can get a good weekly shop for less than half the price I would in Tesco. The odd time there is something I need that Aldi doesn't have I will go to a different shop for it. Of course, I grow my own fresh chives.
