Visited local cafe a few weeks ago, but this is still bothering me as I'm not sure whether to return.

Owner/manager (not sure which) was making a fuss over dd and generally making pleasant small baby chit chat. (She's gorgeous, I have grandchildren, is she sleeping etc)

She said 'are you feeding her yourself?' While I think it's a strange phrase, I've come to understand this means are you breastfeeding, so I said yes. She said 'well done you. Let me know if you need a blanket or anything'. At the time I said no thanks, she said ok, end of exchange.

Now I am wondering, was she being nice or was she suggesting I had to cover up if a fed dd. am fine if its the former, not so much if its the latter. I'm worried about going back in- do you think she was just being friendly, or AIBU to think that she was actually saying 'do not feed without covering up'

You will probebly think im worrying over nothing, but I get quite self conscious about bf when out.

She was just being nice!

Doinmummy · 07/04/2014 10:52

I think she was being nice - I do think its so hard these days to say anything to anyone without it being taken the wrong way.

Shesparkles · 07/04/2014 10:52

I think she was being kind, and letting you know she had no issues about you breast feeding in the premises. She offered you a blanket if you needed it, she didn't throw it over your head!
Don't read any more into it, I really don't think she was being anything other than considerate

IMurderedStampyLongnose · 07/04/2014 10:53

She was clearly just being nice.Jeez chill out!

YABU and paranoid. She was being friendly and trying to be helpful.

PorkPieandPickle · 07/04/2014 10:55

Ok, I did think at the time she seemed really nice, but I just worried about it after.

Glad to clarify. I will chill out!!!

Ach no - she was just expressing her support and being nice.

DramaAlpaca · 07/04/2014 10:57

It sounds to me like she was being nice and helpful.

As a cafe owner she probably has experience of breastfeeding mums coming in & knows that some are more relaxed than others about breastfeeding in public & was offering you assistance & a bit of extra privacy if you need it.

Definitely go back!

Theas18 · 07/04/2014 11:02

Cripes she was just been nice and supportive, how would you like us to make you feel supported when out and about? Honestly if anyone can give me a "stock phrase" I'd love to know.

I work where there is a waiting room and I know if mums are breastfeeding so I say with a smile "feel free to breast feed here any time- even just pop in to do it if you need to, and if anyone gives you any trouble I'll send the heavies round" ..... maybe people feel I'm really going to beat people up?

SelectAUserName · 07/04/2014 11:03

It sounds at face value like she was being nice, supportive, letting you know you were in an environment sympathetic to bf-ing and also sensitive to the fact that just as you say you do OP, many women feel self-conscious about bf-ing in public so she could provide you with a little additional privacy if you felt you needed it.

NymodigFruOla · 07/04/2014 11:03

She said she has grandchildren, so she is probably of a generation where it was more usual to see breastfeeding mums using a blanket, or whatever.

Yes, she was just being nice!

PorkPieandPickle · 07/04/2014 11:04

I will go back this week now! I'm only just getting used to bf in public and am tending to be a bit paranoid about it! Prob because DM and MIL keep banging on about 'covering up' I go back without worrying now :)

She was definitely meaning that you mustn't BF unless you are hidden under a blanket, ideally from head to toe, facing a wall and if possible while sitting in the broom cupboard.
