Ok stupid question but if you buy a bone from the pet shop how do you know if its raw or cooked? They have a big box of loose bones and I pick one out for my dog sometimes who loves it.

Doodledumdums · 07/04/2014 08:41

No, never. I used to work in a veterinary hospital and saw a young westie who was brought in and subsequently, very sadly died because a cooked lamb bone had pierced through his oesophagus Sad

Viva a general rule of thumb would be, if it's in a fridge it's raw, if not, not.

VivaLeBeaver · 07/04/2014 10:38

Thanks. I think I've being giving cooked ones then. Will stop.

Where do you get raw bones from? Local butchers?

CaptChaos · 07/04/2014 11:27

I get them from butchers and sometimes supermarkets.

Viva I get most of the bones I feed as part of his raw diet from Morrisons. They have great Lamb, Pork and beef bones out on the meat shelves labelled as stock bones. They are really meaty and usually about 20p each. Chunks of spine are a favourite!

And whilst raw feeding is an individual thing and no one has to or should be snippy about it...can I just dispell the myths that you have to have another freezer and it has to cost a fortune...it doesn't. I am the first to admit I only have a little terrier but he shares theregular 4 drawer family freezer and I buy a month and a half worth at a time so could still buy weekly for a big dog! It costs me around the same as it did feeding arden grange and I am using one of the more expensive ready prepped most of the time. I have DIY'd and can do it from 20p a day.

Oops sorry. I posted after a bottle few glasses, I get on my soap box occasionally and I appear to have let loose on MN Blush

8is I buy sheep heads from our local supplier who sells them cut in half and frozen and road kill is just pheasants from the side of a country lane I use daily.

I do know I'm lucky to have a garage with a prep area and fridge freezer and dinners are given to Ddog in her garden run or on the kitchen floor which gets mopped once she has finished.

I buy from local butchers who also sell minced chicken or beef with bone in or suppliers like daves doggie dinners.
