She's just delivered an animal skin drum as a gift from her holidays from south africa. I'm genuinely starting to freak out about anthrax spores. Please tell me IABU and why.

Hey, I'm an equal opportunities worrier, quite prepared that I've got death anthrax too.

Did the scottish guy make drums? I thought he just went to a drumming class?

I doubt street sellers have endangered species skin for sale on tourist drums. Probably goat or cattle.

What if you filled a bath and stuck the drum in the water? would the anthrax spores (if any) float out?
But I think you are being dotty and should stop worrying about it.

Goodadvice1980 · 06/04/2014 16:40

But we don't know that she brought the wretched gift from a "street seller" do we?

rallytog1 · 06/04/2014 17:29

My mum imports them. They're all over the house including in one bedroom where they're are dozens stored. No one has died from anthrax yet.

BlackeyedSusan · 06/04/2014 19:19

ex brought one home from kenya. something in it ate his mothers carpet. leave it in the garage for a bit.

cozietoesie · 06/04/2014 19:22

Too late now in any case, OP. Have you got a recent will?

DroothyNeebor · 06/04/2014 19:59

The Scottish guy did make drums but it's thought that he contracted the anthrax during drumming class.
The report indicates West African drums

You can download the report on the incident if you google- NHS Borders report into Anthrax death

[[http://www.hpa.org.uk/Topics/InfectiousDiseases/InfectionsAZ/Anthrax/GeneralInformation/anthr040Riskofanthraxfromdrums/ 'The risk of contracting anthrax from animal hide drums

Summary review of the literature

The risk of contracting anthrax is very low. The risk is primarily through the making of animal hide drums rather than through playing or handling them. It is thought to be through the removal of hair from the animal hides that spores can cause either cutaneous or inhalational anthrax, although this remains very rare.

Seek medical treatment early - anthrax is effectively treated with antibiotics.
Those who make, own or play animal hide drums should report any unexplained fever or new skin lesions to their GP, describing their recent contact with drums']]

1 death in years and years.

Do you know how many road deaths there are each year?

I suspect that if you decided to take the drum to the tip then you are far more likely to crash and die on the way there than you are to get anthrax.

I did know it was an irrational fear. Hence me not picking it up, yodelling a war cry and torching it. Cos you know, it'd make me a bit of a dick.

acorse, inhalation starts off as a cold AND WE ARE GERM PIT CENTRAL. id just like one week I could breathe instead fight snot and wjeezing

Balaboosta · 07/04/2014 00:39

Are you reassured, OP?

NeedsAsockamnesty · 07/04/2014 00:52

She's obviously trying to murder you.

Do not lick the drum no matter how tempting it is

LadyRainicorn · 07/04/2014 12:53

Licking hair? What a horrifying thought I now can't stopimagining the tecture. I Do feel a bit better today at least.

If she wanted to kill me she'd just drive me places. We've had to wrestle the steering wheel to avoid an oncoming lorry before.
