to put my dog in kennels

We put our dog in kennels for 2 weeks a year, in the summer, when we go on holiday.
She's always seemed fine when we collect her. She doesn't go mad crazy with excitement when she sees us (and I take that to mean she's not traumatised and is content where she is)
I was chatting to friends yesterday and expressed surprise (and some disapproval) at us putting the dog in kennels. Its not the first time either. We did our research when finding a kennel, didn't like a couple we went to visit, chose this one because of its reputation, cleanliness and the fact that it seemed quite calm and organised when we visited (we visited one where the dogs were hysterical and sounded as though they'd had no human contact for hours and hours)
So iabu to put the dog in kennels?

Yanbu.

You did your research to find a good place,it doesn't distress your dog so what's the problem?

Next time you go away ask the friend to dog sit and see how strong her principles actually are.

Not at all! Especially as you have viewed several and found one you are comfy with! My parents regularly usea kennel for their 2 border ccollies and they hate coming home! They get fussed to death, walked miles and bathed before being collected! It's like a doggy spa and they love it!! My batshit crazy Patterdale hates new people, goes crazy if you leave her alone and yet she absolutely loved being their!! She was so calm after coming home that's am tempted turnout her in one day a week just so I get some peace from her!!

My dog is in kennels right now. When I took on Wednesday as soon as we pulled up he got excited by the time we got to the office he was beside himself. He loves it all day long he gets to run around barking, so being a dog.

The first kennels I visited my dog would have gone there over my dead body. Awful place.

The second one were fantastic, came on recommendation, and we used them several times for our previous dog.

They weren't right for the dog we have now, so we took advice again and sought recommendations and we have somewhere we're extremely happy with now.

I couldn't do it personally but if the dogs are happy and well cared for then it is fine!

I'm having this dilemma at the moment.

Murph is 6 months now and we are holidaying in the UK, but his training is still in progress and frankly I don't trust him to pee on the carpets in the caravan we are renting.
Added to this, this is the first 'family' holiday we've had for a long time and comes at the end of a bloody rotten couple of years with the death of FIL and DH working a 2 hour commute away. He's got a new job, amazing salary AND its close to home so I feel like this holiday is a bloody big sigh of relief for us.

We debated yesterday, all the things we wanted to do on the holiday (theme park visit, restaurants, beach etc) are not dog friendly. We took a vote and opted to leave Murphy in kennels.

I don't feel too guilty, we used that kennels with both our late dogs and I trust the owner implicitly. I do worry how Murphy will cope, but I'm planning to leave him for an afternoon and then an overnight stay just to ease him in a little.

Next year he can come with us, but I think this year we all need a bit of time out.
