SIL came around today and conversation turned to the change reported this week that 7 a day is the recommended amount of fruit and veg a day.
She said that her DCs get at least 10 portions a day so it doesn't bother her. I said that all my DCs could do it except DS3 (5) who is very fussy, she asked what I feed him and when I told her she ranted for ages saying I over feed him and if I stopped giving him so much he would eat more fruit.
I don't know if I am or not because I don't know what everyone else feeds their 5 year olds. I think my others used to eat the same amount but it was awhile ago so I may be confused.

Okay so in a typical school day he has

Breakfast- a piece of toast (with nothing on) and a glass of milk
School snack - half an apple
Lunch- a piece of bread folded in half with ham, a babybel, a box of raisins and a glass of water
Dinner- in the winter it is something warm like spaghetti Bolognese or chilli and rice and pudding can be a mouse or yogurt or a homemade cake or crumble. It fits on a child plate/bowl with room to spare.

We have takeaway once every two weeks. They can also have fruit for a snack after school but DS3 doesn't like fruit very much so he doesn't tend to have any.

So is that too much, or not SIL was very upset with me because she thinks I will damage him.

Thank you for all your advice. Glad to see that my DS isn't completely odd. And thank you for all the tips I will try some of them out. Grin

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this but my friend is a dental nurse and said that the children who gorge on fruit have worse teeth than those who gorge on sweets. Tell your SIL that ;)
I told that to a judgey parent who was telling her child how horrendous other parents are for giving their child sweets. It soon shut her up!

IdkickJilliansAss · 05/04/2014 22:04

My MIL had a toothless friend who worked on a fruit and veg stall and munched fruit all day long

Bigmrsdragon · 05/04/2014 22:04

NannyK7H - maybe I should though I doubt she would believe me.

Goodness my 2 year old eats at least that amount if not more. She is quite small for her age. She probably has a bit more dairy in her diet tho and more fruit as she loves it.
My 4 yo eats like your son again more fruit and dairy but similar amounts. Tell sil to do one Wink

Oldraver · 05/04/2014 22:09

It seems a little lacking in veg especially compare to the portions of sugary stuff.

But...... unless you ask for help your childs diet should be off limits for discussion...just fudge any reply to your SIL or tell her to mind her own

mameulah · 05/04/2014 22:13

All sounds lovely, except for the half an apple for his school snack.

Are you sure he eats it? Does it not get a bit brown?

Bigmrsdragon · 05/04/2014 22:21

I have ignored SIL' s text though DH thinks that should have replied by reminding her of last month when her DCs tipped my eldests candy grabber toy upside down and ate all the sweets within about 5 minutes.
But apparently that was my fault for leaving sweets ' within reach' (they are 7,11 and 13) so I think they should know not to do that.

Mameulah- the school cut it and give it to him. I think he does eat it because the teacher keeps an eye on them and if they don't eat it then she tells the parents at the door.

My 10 month old DD eats more than that, and I'm not joking...

meganorks · 05/04/2014 22:32

My 2 year old eats more than that and she isn't fat or overfed. Your will is loopy. Maybe its all the fruit and veg. Give her a bit of cake for gods sake!

meganorks · 05/04/2014 22:33

SIL is loopy!

haveyourselfashandy · 05/04/2014 22:37

Those kids teeth are going to be rotten eating all that fruit.
Your ds's diet sounds just fine.

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 05/04/2014 23:28

OP, your DS diet sounds fine. Over feeding would result in weight gain.

You DN diet is much too heavy on fruit and not enough veg. Green veg is particularly important.

Per BBC reporting on '7 a day':
Fresh vegetables had the strongest protective effect, followed by salad and then fruit.

So your SIL has room for improvement...
