Why would any parent put money on the grand national for DC

Seen this a lot of FB, I don't bet on horses ( that a whole different thread)

But why would parents encourage DC to bet on this race.

Breaking the law. I think you may need to purchase a life

Theodorous · 05/04/2014 16:07

Not wrong, bloody barmy

Funnyfoot · 05/04/2014 16:09

We have had a in-house bet with the DC's because I couldn't be arsed to go to the bookies. We are sat here now all excited and it is a fond memory I have from my childhood. It is a once a year event and something of a tradition.

I know that certain people have certain views however I nor my DH share them and we enjoy the national.

Judge away it won't stop me. Grin

If the worst thing my children are taught is gambling a quid once a year by me. Im a happy bunny.

ICanSeeTheSun · 05/04/2014 16:17

Good luck to your DC, hope they win and enjoy the race.

Me and DS2 had Double Seven and the bastard came third!! Angry

OP I've changed my mind...YANBU at all! Grin

Oblomov · 05/04/2014 16:30

We do. Boys chose horses. We all bet &1 at the bookies.
I won.

ComposHat · 05/04/2014 16:36

Break the law for fucks sake!

I imagine what we are talking about is letting the child pick a horse and then the adult going to the bookies using their own money as a stake and then gives the child the money if they win. It is a harmless diversion akin to buying a raffle or tambola ticket.

insanityscatching · 05/04/2014 16:38

My df used to put 20p on for me when I was a child, I used to let my dc choose a horse and today now adult ds has put a couple of quid on for me and dh.

HypodeemicNerdle · 05/04/2014 16:51

Haven't done it on the grand national but did do it on the gold cup at cheltenham for the first time this year. My DS picked the winner and was so excited, DD1 picked the number 3 horse and we shared out the winnings equally between us all. While I can understand not encouraging regular gambling in childhood I think once a year isn't going to do them any harm. Oh and I did put it on facebook too Grin

HowContraryMary · 05/04/2014 16:52

Not seeing the problem with it. Always done it for our children.

SauvignonBlanche · 05/04/2014 16:54

Why on earth not?

Minnieisthedevilmouse · 05/04/2014 16:57

No op you're not bu. You really didn't think this thru very far did you...?

Break the law...... Quick everyone the rozzers are coming!! Hide the £1 bet slip!!!!

WorraLiberty · 05/04/2014 16:59

To be fair to the OP, she's graciously accepted that she's BU and even said she hopes the children enjoy the race.

gordyslovesheep · 05/04/2014 17:01

didn't win a thing Grin bugger!

NeonMuffin · 05/04/2014 17:01

My parents used to put bets on for me as a child. I know a bit about horse racing and I know that the horses are treated better than some humans! The idea that they are mistreated of abused is absurd, they have the absolute best of everything.

SoleSource · 05/04/2014 17:03

You're all reported. The S.A.S are my friends. They will swoop down your chimneys tonight and steal your betting slips.

TeaForThree lost howls :(

hashtagwhatever · 05/04/2014 17:09

My dc picked the winner and second place

They are mega excited now

XiCi · 05/04/2014 17:09

Hahaha encouraging them to break the law! Mumsnet is so weird sometimes.

DD (3) had a great time picking her horse based on the colour of her silks and we all had fun screaming at the tv as it romped in. She now has 85 quid for her bank account. It's a bit of fun FFS

Pregnantberry · 05/04/2014 17:14

I am of the opinion that the whole ordeal should be made illegal for being bloody boring. Grin

icclemunchy · 05/04/2014 17:21

Uhh ohh. Will they be arresting just me or dd too? Both odours unseated their rider but dh's came 2nd Grin

Lucyccfc · 05/04/2014 17:56

I wouldn't see an issue with it, if I hadn't had an ex-H who was a gambling addict. Used to spend the mortgage money, steal from me etc to gamble. He phoned me this morning to say maintenance will be late (again) as he has no money. On the verge of being kicked out of his house due to non payment of rent.

This is something that should be seen as a bit of fun, but I have had to have quite a few conversations with my DS, who is 8 about the dangers of gambling, as he has seen first hand the misery it can cause, when I have had to pick him up from his Dad's early due to there being no food in the house or no electricity.

I know my case is probably extreme, but I have taught him that gambling is not a bit of fun and is an extremely stupid thing to do. I think it hit home, when I set up a bit of gambling on football. He thought it would be fun, so I got him to bet me the result of a particular football match (including scores). He placed a £10 bet from his own pocket money and we worked out the odds. If he was right, he got £13 back, if he lost, he lost his money. To really hammer the point home, he lost, so I took his £10 note into the garden and set it on fire. Suffice to say, he thinks gambling is a bloody stupid thing to do now.

I wouldn't judge others for placing bets for their children, it's non of my business, but for my DS is is a huge No.

hairypaws · 05/04/2014 17:58

We did and had a fabulous 5 minutes cheering them on. Mine came in second.

Bankholidaybaby · 05/04/2014 18:06

My dad still does it for me. I'm 33.

Treaclepot · 05/04/2014 18:07

Its a great lesson in losing (we do every year!)
