to be unforgiving of my employees?

With some other people, I own a share of an organisation. I recently discovered that one of the managers fiddled £45,000 on her expenses. She's offered to pay £5,000 back. Her basic salary is £141,000 but she gets perks on top.

I say we should sack her at once, but her colleagues say that she's apologised so we should forget about it.

I don't think the other owners are too pleased either. Should we do what the other managers say, or are they just saying that because some of them have been fiddling their expenses as well?

Nice. Culture Secretary applicants form a queue here!

formerbabe · 04/04/2014 18:57

Are you the prime minister by any chance?

GreatSoprendo · 04/04/2014 18:58

She fiddled £45k and is offering to pay back just £5k. Where's your other £40k?!

Yes I would sack her immediately - it's gross misconduct - and I'd also involve the Police, as she has committed theft.

RubyrooUK · 04/04/2014 18:58

I always suspected PigletJohn held a position of power. Wink

Giraffeski · 04/04/2014 18:59

Lol

GreatSoprendo · 04/04/2014 18:59

Aha...... Yes, still sack her please Dave.

feebeecat · 04/04/2014 18:59

YANBU
Any other 'organisation' police would be called and she'd be out. What difference her apology makes beats me Hmm

paxtecum · 04/04/2014 18:59

Goodness, they seem to have very low moral standards.

Sack her.

PigletJohn · 04/04/2014 19:01

I'm just one among many. There are quite a lot of us, but we do own the business and we employ the managers.

I think it's disgusting and she should be fired immediately. Think of all the lesser employees ... Who would be fired and convicted if they stole a pack of crisps from the canteen or £20 from a till because their basic salaries are £12,000 or £13,000 and they can't afford any lunch. You wouldn't let them off, or if you did you'd not do it a second time. Pack of crisps > £45,000 ..... Sack her.

BornOfFrustration · 04/04/2014 19:11

Ouch. I'd sack her.

Pleasejustgo · 04/04/2014 19:13

Sack her! Conniving thief. Community service included Grin

PigletJohn · 04/04/2014 19:13

You are a part-owner as well. There are about sixty million of us owners.

Those managers we employ think they can do what they like.

She deserves to be going on holiday at her majesties pleasure IMO! Apology not accepted!

BillStickersIsInnocent · 04/04/2014 19:16

Apparently she's been reported officially to the police already

Terrortree · 04/04/2014 19:16

Gross misconduct I'd say if she knowingly withdrew funds that she was not entitled to.

Suspend for now, investigate properly (get in an external consultant if need be) and fire.

BillStickersIsInnocent · 04/04/2014 19:17

Which is good obviously. But Dave thinks she's alright.

Sacking and jail I reckon, only fair.

sarahquilt · 04/04/2014 19:17

She's stolen money. You should call the police.

EverythingsDozy · 04/04/2014 19:20

But what can the owners actually do? Do they have any physical powers to sack her?! I mean, surely it'd have to be a unanimous thing, if only 20 owners out of 60million chose to sack her it hardly going to go ahead is it?

RevoltingPeasant · 04/04/2014 19:20

Oh, come on.

Personally I think you should promote her - maybe a nice peerage?

ohmymimi · 04/04/2014 19:22

Blimey, Dave, you've been masquerading as the Plumbing King. I'm impressed.

PigletJohn · 04/04/2014 19:23

Dave might like to think he is the owner, but he isn't.

He's just a manager that we owners employ, on a short-term contract.

OP posts:
route1 · 04/04/2014 19:24

I'm afraid you have to blame the owners for not taking enough notice. It's not the first time it's happened by a long shot, your employees clearly feel they are above the law.

dianeabbottrules · 04/04/2014 19:27

No, we need more female senior managers not to sack the ones we have.

oldgrandmama · 04/04/2014 19:29

It's absolutely outrageous. And politicians wonder why us proles are so cynical about them. As many many commentators have remarked, if this person had been some poor devil trying to make a few quid by scamming the DHSS (or whatever the hell it's called these days), she'd have been hauled up before the courts and maybe even got a prison sentence. I am totally disgusted .. and I used to be a Tory voter [hangs head in shame ...]
