To want these real nappies to work? They leak every day!

My 10week old DS is in Little Lamb pocket nappies using 2 bamboo boosters in each one. I wash and dry them according to the instructions- 30 degrees, less detergent, air dry etc. I change him around every 2 or 3 hours. They leak around the leg every day at least once, sometimes within the hour. What am I doing wrong? Does DS wee an extraordinary amount? Or are they rubbish nappies? The extra clothes and sheets washing is driving me mad. Help!

Yes they do get better with use - where I bought mine new from, they washed them six times before shipping.

Use hardly any detergent, and an extra rinse.

Join one of the Facebook sites and post some pics, people will be able to help check the fit, I have found pockets are rubbish for 12w ds but great for 2y ds, the different types of nappies are really different and it's taken me a while to find ones I like and that work, now I have I'm so glad and my bin doesn't stink!!Grin

He might just be a bit too small. I've been using pockets (bum genius and Fuzzibunz) on my son since he was four months, but he was a fairly large four month old.

I've used both liquid and powder on my nappies, and I think powder is supposed to be better (although I doubt they've built up much residue on them already). Just use a tiny amount.

We very rarely get leaks, and I'm really pleased that we decided to go with reusables - as well as everything else, they're so cute Smile

I love Little Lamb nappies, but not til 3 months plus (although I do have small babies). The birth to potty ones are difficult to get a good fit on when they're small, although I had equal problems trying to find size 0 disposables (Boots own brand worked well, if anyone's interested). I also do disposable over night (Sainsburys Eco) and never had a leak. Rarely had leaks with Little Lamb beyond 4 months, and only wee.

WomanScorned · 03/04/2014 20:00

The only times we ever had leaks was when I used popper vests.
I didn't use pocket nappies until around 4m tho, as they just weren't snug enough on his little chicken legs.
Don't give up on renewables - they're so worth persevering with.

I agree with those saying about 2 part systems. DS1 was in bumgenius from about 2 months, right through to potty-training. He had the occasional leak, but nothing major.

DS2 didn't get on with the Bumgenius at all. I tried 2 parters and they were pretty much bomb proof - we used Totsbots bamboozle stretch with a mix of Totsbots and Motherease wrappers. When he was bigger, the Totsbots easyfit worked reasonably well, too.

Hi

Gel can coat the nappy making it less absorbent and no fabric conditioner. You may need to strip the nappies if they have become coated, a good test is slowly pour water (or syringe as more like the babies flow) into your nappy to see if they are absorbing the water.

You need to wash with a tiny bit of non bio powder. Tbh after a quick pre wash I usually bung my other whites in for a full load and use 1 non bio tesco tablet. Also it can take up to 40 washes for some nappies to reach full absorbency until then they might only last 2 hours.

Contact your local nappy library as they can give you great advice and even have someone come to your house to check fit ect. You can also hire kits from them to test out different nappies.

www.greatbritishnappyhunt.co.uk/nappy_libraries.html

There are also nappicinos where I live, where cloth mums meet up for a chat, tea and swap advice on nappies.

If it's not the nappies absorbency then it could be the fit around the leg (needs to be very snug) or perhaps you might be over stuffing.

I use motherease one size with a wrap as they are pretty much bullet proof (as I tend to forget and change poor dc every 4/5 hours unless he has had a poo). I have branched out into tots bots recently as boots were doing them 3 for 2. They are ok and dry very quickly but I feel more confident with my meos.

I used pockets when they were older.
Mother ease were the best with micro fibre cloths.

Mine pissed like horses and they coped well.

Those who say disposables, it's fine it you want to use them. I often do if my dc head to grandparents ect but my cloth have saved me a fortune. I used disposables for my first as I couldn't get cloth to work for me - lots of leaks - in hindsight I wasn't fitting the nappies right and they hadn't reached full absorbency.

Then with Two dc is nappies I returned to cloth. Got 40 preloaded meos, plus wraps and boosters for about £30 and have never looked back. The cost of disposable is my driving factor as I just don't have the money. I wash my cloth every 2/3 days then line dry.
