AIBU - not quite school uniform

Call me an old fuddy duddy but I saw a girl wearing pleated culottes yesterday and couldn't help but make this face

What other odd items have you seen people wearing to school?

I think schools that obsess about strict school uniform are pretty ridiculous anyway. I can see the benefit of having a uniform to reduce one-upmanship, but so long as they are reasonably tidy I really can't see that the details matter. I think it's just wrong that teachers spend so much time nagging children about how ties are done up or whether they've got the right colour socks, instead of teaching them. And culottes look very smart.

Stink level, if I were in your place I'd have complained about that. It's taking uniform rules to ridiculous lengths.

Our guideline is referred to as 'ready for work' with the premise that getting dressed in school clothes changes your mind-set.

I would be cross about a child getting in trouble when they had a change of shoes all ready. That is just daft

Summer dresses with tights or leggings is fine. It's too cold for dresses alone and too warm for full winter uniform. It's a great solution. Dd wears summer dress and leggings at the moment as do most of the other girls.

What's wrong with culottes ?
Many schools don't allow girls in shorts sadly - culottes sort of become a compromise.

My son wears dark cords/jeans to school when his trousers are mucky. He also wears his blue trainers often. His friend wears rwd converse. They're all 4yrs.

You'd hate our school - today I have seen grey jeans, black culottes, black stretchy pencil skirts, grey tunics with sparkly leggings... Half the kids wear trainers, every girl wears leggings under skirts and lots wear summer dresses with tights.

I can't see that having to wear school uniform helps prepare anyone for work. Work involves having to make a choice about what is appropriate, school uniform relieves you of that choice.

That is why it isn't a 'uniform'. I sort of get your point nanny but I wear specific clothes for work as do most I would reckon.

I think it is hard for both schools and parents to get a balance

I never understand why people get so hung up on what other people wear. What's wrong with a summer dress and tights or culottes?

DD wears culottes and loves them. I think it's nice to not be too strict about school uniform. I like having a uniform, but I like that DD can choose bits that she likes. It's also a great money saver buying school uniform from supermarkets.

My school was very strict and everything had to come from a specific (very expensive) shop and there were no variations available. For work I dress very casually. I don't face customers so no need to look smart. What I wore 20+ years ago has no bearing on how I dress now...

What's wrong with culottes? My dd wears shorts and tights. Our school isn't draconian about uniform. As long as it's the right colour and appropriate, no one cares. I like that. However, I had to put my foot down on dd wanting to wear leggings the other day. Just because Betty wears them, doesn't mean it's right.
