To confront my neighbour over this?

I recently moved house to a block of 4 converted flats, I am on the ground floor. The upstairs neighbour who I introduced myself to in the first week seemed to have a problem with me from the outset as I had mistakenly put post from the previous tenants in her box without knowing it was hers (they were not labelled with numbers and I presumed (wrongly) that the post was a kind of 'communal' set up). Anyway, she asked me not to put any in hers in the future as she didn't appreciate it. Fine, fair enough.

Just putting my shoes on as I came out of my flat and to tie my laces up I put my foot up on the stairs and I suppose I could be heard fiddling around. My neighbour had a delivery man at her door and I could hear them talking. The next thing I heard is her saying "it's extraordinary how some people think it's ok to eavesdrop on conversations'. Er, ok, I was just going out and so I said, 'eavesdropping? I'm just putting my shoes on after coming out if my house', to which there was no reply, just mutterings.

Argh, she's elderly, and harmless but this has really pissed me off.

Should I confront her? I feel bad now but surely I wasn't doing anything wrong?

I probably wouldn't have said anything because you have just proved that you were eavesdropping. I know that's not helpful now though.
I would probably leave well alone. Or at least until she has done something to really get your back up.

I don't think overhearing people talking is the same as deliberately earwigging. You didn't do anything wrong. Some people just make it their business to be unpleasant. She sounds rather passive aggressive with her 'some people' comment. Challenge her if she accuses you of things again, but other than that, ignore her.

AuroraRoared · 03/04/2014 14:29

I'd ignore her. She sounds miserable and bonkers.

funkypigeon · 03/04/2014 15:15

Yes, I kind of wish I'd not said anything now. Oh well.

Ignore and, if you can, put her out of your mind. I've had really arsey neighbours before and it can be miserable. So don't let it escalate in your own head or in real life (if that makes sense!). Keep it polite and civil and get on with your own stuff.
I've wasted far too much energy stressing about neighbours, and ultimately it just made me unhappy. Don't let that happen to you.

Mantra; you cannot reason with an unreasonable person.

She sounds VU. I feel annoyed for you OP. Just try your best to avoid her in future.

wishingchair · 03/04/2014 18:17

Ignore, smile and wave.

Annoying, yes - but to confront her after one comment and a minor run in - totally over the top.
