To worry and wonder how hard conceiving is going to be with PCOS?

Last night DP and I had a chat and we both decided that now is the right time to start ttc!

I felt excited at this, but after a 6 year battle with constant flood bleeding and pains, I was finally diagnosed with Polycystic Ovaries and the beginning of uterine fibroids two weeks ago.

Now, I am 22 stone (feel so ashamed writing that, but that's how it is), and I have read so many stories of other PCOS sufferers who have simply made changes to their diet, shed some weight, and without the help of fertility drugs conceived. Now, I am not a fool and know that the road ahead with regards to ttc could be a long one, but can anyone give me any hope with success stories?

Thanks!

I have PCOS and am currently feeding 2.5 week old DD Grin

It took us 3 years to conceive, from coming off the pill. I have what is referred to as "skinny" PCOS meaning I don't have weight issues, but I do have irregular periods, excess hair, acne, etc. I was told that there are links between PCOS and insulin resistance, so they often recommend following a low GI diet for sufferers.

Good luck!

Aww FrankelandFilly, congratulations on your new DD! Is she all scrummy and cuddly like only newborns can be? I have a little more hope with each pcos success story I read, so thanks everyone for your encouragement!

I will definitely look into a low GI diet. Anything is worth a baby at the end of it!

She is indeed very scrummy and squishy, and currently fast asleep on me Grin

The key thing is don't let any Dr's fob you off, there are plenty of things that can be done for PCOS sufferers.

Also, since being diagnosed a few weeks back with pcos, I spoke to the doctor on the phone about what this means. He advised I see a gynaecologist at the hospital to discuss what happens next. I am still waiting for that appointment to come through the post, but I did ask the doctor about Metformin as I have heard so many great things about it. He said in line with current NICE guidelines, Metformin is no longer the favourable drug to treat pcos as it shows no link to making symptoms any better, but to discuss it further with gynae. I will do this when I go to my appointment, but what if they won't give me this superdrug?! I have heard loads of people have gotten pregnant not long after going on it.

Metformin made me very depressed, vile drug for me.

thepolymysticovary · 03/04/2014 17:43

Oh no, SoleSource. Did you take it to aid your pcos? Didn't it work for you at all?

I didn't get on well with metformin either, gave me awful ibs like symptoms.

SoleSource · 03/04/2014 18:19

Yep, have PCOS. I felt very down, lost my temper easily, weepy. Dr said these symptoms are commonplace.

Lj8893 · 03/04/2014 18:28

Thinking about it now, I had similar symptoms as sole

thepolymysticovary · 03/04/2014 18:46

Oh no Lj and Sole, you poor things. You didn't need to feel down and weepy when you were already poorly :(

Please don't let this put you off!! X

I have PCOS and it took me a year to conceive. I weighed 9 1/2 stone at the time of conception after dieting to TTC. I was about to go and see the Dr for some help when I found out I was pregnant. Good luck TTC

SoleSource · 03/04/2014 19:01

Aww lovely story, magic.

thepolymysticovary · 04/04/2014 18:48

That's lovely magical. How much weight did you lose if you don't mind me asking?

mystic I had metformin before trying for DC1. It helped me lose weight by either making me feel sick therefore not eating so as not to chuck, or suppressing my appetite. It depended on when i took it. I hadn't been on it for ages before TTC a nd had put weight back on. It's not the end of the world if you don't get prescribed it. Chin up....focus on babies and the lettuce and carrots will seem worth it Smile

thepolymysticovary · 08/04/2014 13:53

I have been on a low calorie, low carb, low sugar and low sat fat diet since Friday, so four days, and I have been really disciplined with myself.

I lost 8lbs so far and what is better, the flooding that was happening has gone to a very light spotting. I am so happy!

thepolymysticovary · 08/04/2014 13:55

I know 8lbs seems a lot too, but I have been eating three balanced meals a day and snacking on nuts and fruit in between meals.

I have PCOS, and need IVF for DS. They won't carry out IVF - either private or NHS funded - until your BMI is 35 or under. Some clinics demand a BMI of 30.

I had to lose 3 stone to get down to 35 BMI, and even under the hospital dietitian it took about 16 months.

However, I have been doing the 5:2 diet for about 2 months, and have lost 14lbs. I really would recommend it if the eating regime you are currently on gets too much for you?

Best of luck.

(Another 'biscuit or baby' mantra used here too :D )
