AIBU To wonder how the hell do people trust this thing against pregnancy? They say check the strings , that's if u can find the damn things in the first place !? I've heard so many failings online but I can't take hormonal contraception and DP isn't ready for the snip just yet. Shud I just chill and trust its doing its job ? I can't go to the nurse every month to check it :-/

I love mine. I have a very high cervix so can't feel the strings, nor can DP Hmm but I've no problems with it!

Hormonal contraception sends me barmy, the copper coil is perfect Grin

HairyGrotter · 31/03/2014 18:35

Mind you, it's coming out in August, but as soon as I've had my next and last baby, I'll sling another up there! Great thing for me is that little coil!

Milkmachinemadness · 31/03/2014 19:04

I think I will get it checked just to make sure it has fallen out [blush[

Another success story here! Had my copper coil put in as emergency contraception when I was 21 (after DD1 was born). Had it taken out five years later to have DD2 - fell pg immediately - and then had it put back in afterwards. No pg scares at all. Although I do know that the threads on this one are quite short so how they'll get it out, I don't know.....!

I don't like hormonal contraception so the coil is perfect for me. It makes my periods a lot heavier, but generally shorter. Based on my experience I'd thoroughly recommend it as an easy, reliable, safe method of contraception :)

BankWadger · 31/03/2014 19:26

Love my coil.

You have to remember that people talk about negative experiences far more than good ones, which is why you read so many stories about the copper coil failing. For most people it works fine, so they don't talk about it.

Besides it's failure rate is only a tiny bit bigger than the hormonal coil which is very very small.

Milkmachinemadness · 31/03/2014 21:43

I would imagine surely I would feel it fall out ? I dunno , and yes your right I suppose people wouldn't post success stories more failure stories

Had mine in a grand total of 4 days before ending up in A&E having it removed - turns out I have a copper allergy!!

pointythings · 31/03/2014 22:09

Well, mine certainly stopped me from getting pregnant. I had it because hormonal contraception was making my blood pressure rise and we didn't want children yet. Getting it put in caused me a Casualty moment - BP 90/45, me fainting all over the place.

Then it gave me the most horrendous painful flooding periods I'd ever had in my life on a random cycle of 38 to 45 days - I had always been clockwork 31 days.

When I had it out because we wanted to try for children, my erratic cycle remained, I was not ovulating (have always had painful ovulation) and it took us 7 months to conceive. I had 5 erratic cycles following coil removal, one normal one, then I conceived on the one after that. No more copper coil for me.

anchovies · 31/03/2014 22:09

When ds was born by cs, the consultant was decidedly much more impressed with the coil he removed than the baby!

staticdust · 31/03/2014 22:11

Had it for four years, no problems, DH used to say he could feel it, but not in a uncomfortable way, so yes DH was doing all the checking for me Blush

Milkmachinemadness · 31/03/2014 22:41

I don't want more kids ATM :-/ is this wrong for us ? I really don't know ?
