To celebrate absolutely everything!

Yes I know by mumsnet standards I'm a total diva! I admit it- I know I am! I've just had an entire "mother's day weekend" and loved every minute of it.

When it's my birthday, I love it best if it falls midweek as then I can have 2 "birthday weekends" as well as a "birthday week". Last year I managed 7 seperate birthday celebrations. And I was 41 so not even a milestone birthday.

In my defense though I also allow/encourage the same amount of ott ness when it comes to the kids birthdays. We also (despite being agnostic) celebrate the following:
Birthdays
Christmas
Easter
Bonfire night
Halloween
Shrove Tuesday
New Years Eve
Valentines day

And we've recently decided to "hijack" other people's religious festivals.

For Eid we have henna parties (but with alcohol) and we also go to Chinatown for Chinese new year.

I'm gonna also look into Hannuka, Thanksgiving and 5TH July. Just in case we're missing out on a celebration there.

Seriously though - why wouldn't you?

I hate all the threads I've seen recently on here where people have been berated for wanting to celebrate their own birthday/mother's day whatever.

Well I'm out and proud!

I want/demand multiple celebrations in our house. It's fun!

OP, you sound fab! Cake

ebwy · 31/03/2014 01:31

In this house we celebrate both solstices (winter and summer) and the 2 equinoxes too... You've just missed spring equinox, OP!

WetAugust · 31/03/2014 01:31

I think celebrating Bastille Day would just be a step too far for me.

bluesbaby · 31/03/2014 02:18

I want to celebrate holi day in india one year :-)

Festivities are fun!

You have just missed norooz (persian new year). I've always felt lucky to celebrate all british and persian holidays.

Mothers day is different in the usa so you can benefit there ;-) and you could celebrate both canadian and american thanksgiving (different dates).

It's actually a really good chance to educate the kids on traditions and customs in other countries!

I shall be celebrating independence day from now on as it's the day my freedom divorce was granted and I finally got rid of the drain on my every resource got closure

Diwali is a particularly lovely celebration I think. I used to fill the house with candles (pre toddler). I also like May Day. I'd celebrate the opening of a crisp bag, so I'm happy to hijack any tradition if I like it. I went to a multi ethnic school and we celebrated everything which was great.

I like traditions with food symbolism. I eat lentils on new year (Italian tradition) and have apples dipped in honey on rosh hashannah, and obviously loads and loads of pancakes on shrove Tuesday (which sometimes is my birthday - so double the fun) :)

My friend had sixth birthdays this year, and I wanted to punch her. She seriously had a tantrum if we couldn't make it to all six. Was pathetic.

HOWEVER, celebrating 'non-me' festivals is a great idea! I just can't be doing with extra 'me', seems so self indulgent.

hippoherostandinghere · 31/03/2014 06:30

Mamma TJ mine too Grin great day.

NationMcKinley · 31/03/2014 06:44

It's my Birthday Eve today! And it's a big one! Can I have a party, Fairy? I think you have totally the right idea - I bloody love a celebration! My family is mixed cultural so happily we have loads Grin

Tanith · 31/03/2014 09:27

You should be a childminder: acknowledgement of all these celebrations and festivals is positively encouraged Grin

Yesterday DD 8 asked "if we have mothers day and fathers day, then when is children's day?" I laughed "every other day of the year!". I was telling my parents who live in Turkey a little later on and in fact they have a chuldrens day in Turkey too, it's 23rd April this year and it's a bank holiday! So I think were going to be made to celebrate that by the DC's, thank mum!

Stinklebell · 31/03/2014 09:43

Hell, no are you being unreasonable

I hate all the "adults shouldn't celebrate birthdays" miseries.

I love Christmas, I love organising massive birthday parties for the kids, I love New Year's Eve, I love weddings (I even love wedding lists and requests for money)

We celebrate anything and everything

Midsummer' night a load of us pack a picnic and go to the local beach, light a bonfire, get pissed and have a fab time.

Life's too short not to celebrate everything going

Oneaddoneisthree · 31/03/2014 09:48

Well, today, 31 March, is Balinese Nyepi (Day of Silence) if you're looking for something else to celebrate. We have a public holiday here in Indonesia.

It seems to mainly involve things being closed, people staying at home and being quiet, but we had a picnic in the park and there were lots of others there!

justasmallone · 31/03/2014 09:52

I' m not as in to it as you, however my birthday has lasted a long time! Had weekend off work, yes I was a princess, went for a posh meal with dh and had a night out with the girls!!

We have birthday weekends regardless of when your birthday falls. Will b celebrating oyr wedding aniversary this week.

Chocoholism · 31/03/2014 09:57

I too love the idea of all these celebrations, people forget that yes some of them are hall mark holidays but we all work so hard mostly and life can be shitty sometimes and it's absolutely lovely and necessary to enjoy these days/weeks and have some fun times to look forward to. All this is good if you are like myself and op it appears but my OH needs help as he never celebrated anything growing up so I think maybe there lie the problem for some? Some do see these things as big deal and some don't. I do and I might have a piece of cake to celebrate Mother's Day Boxing Day Cake
