I'm so sick of seeing this on here lately, perfectly reasonable posts and then someone trying to be funny starts picking it apart and acting like a smug moron.

There really is no need for it, I make mistakes in my posts whether its because of auto-correct or the fact that I'm generally not great with grammar and spelling sometimes but there are others who have literacy problems and I really fail to see what good it does to start taking the piss out of them.

Sometimes I really do think that these people might as well be in the playground, then again I doubt they'd be so rude and insensitive if it weren't for them hiding behind a screen.

I love MN but this is becoming much more common and its crap, stop picking on other posters and think about underlying problems before you jump in with your oh so funny put-downs.

OP posts:

Yanbu.

Unless it is so bad the meaning of the post is altered and clarification is sought.

The posters piping up to say "it's should have not should of" and nothing else is tiresome. I might correct poor grammar/spelling in my head but generally don't feel the need to tell the poster. Not least because I'm hardly immune to typos myself!

WaitMonkey · 30/03/2014 11:18

YANBU.

TheCrackFox · 30/03/2014 11:21

YANBU

Very tiresome indeed.

NiceTabard · 30/03/2014 11:21

Yanbu at all.

MrsBennetsEldest · 30/03/2014 11:22

YANBU.

Think it by all means but to say it is just bloody rude and smug. I think those that feel the need to feel superior are pathetic.

EdithWeston · 30/03/2014 11:22

I haven't spotted the recent threads you mean, but have bpseen it happening.

I think those posters are looking for an excuse to pile in, and errors are just the reason they find.

Everyone makes typos or gets DYACed from time to time.

Unless a post is really incomprehensible (in which case you ask for clarification), then I agree there is no need to mention anything at all.

But I have seen normal posters pointing out nicely that txt spk isn't welcome, and I don't mind that. And using paragraphs in long posts is considerate too, as long unbroken passages can be difficult to read especially on some screens.

MardyBra · 30/03/2014 11:23

So why have you used a capital T for twats, Op? Wink

mrsjay · 30/03/2014 11:23

aye they are complete twats yanbu

although you will get somebody coming onto your thread saying but surely it is helping the person to point out spelling mistakes to improve themselves fuck off

Bunbaker · 30/03/2014 11:23

I am a crap typist and make typos all the time, but there are some things that do irritate - sorry.

Of instead of have
Bare instead of bear
There instead of their

My background in publishing and years of proofreading probably make me more unreasonable than most.

I do find some posts that are particularly badly written difficult to read. For example a huge, long paragraph that has no punctuation, so I just don't bother reading it.

Feel free to pick my post apart Grin

Kleptronic · 30/03/2014 11:24

YANBU. I know some multiply disadvantage women and if they posted on here they'd be flamed and never come back. It excludes people.

picasso87 · 30/03/2014 11:25

Yes the focus on grammar is a strange phenomenon of internet forums, especially when the far more important and prevalent deficiencies in logic and maths skills are largely ignored.

MardyBra · 30/03/2014 11:25

There's a difference between finding things irritating and mentioning them, Bunbaker.

FreudiansSlipper · 30/03/2014 11:26

yanbu

but some people have nothing better to do with their time than belittle others

it is a show of I am educated more likely I am mc and need you to know and you are probably not

wowfudge · 30/03/2014 11:28

Some posts are indecipherable due to poor grammar/spelling. Often not down to the poster's knowledge, but trying to type on the device they are using.

I agree that there is no need to rip into people for poor grammar, etc., but I do find it irritating that bits and pieces I would consider fairly basic are consistently 'wrong' in many posts. A lot of the errors are things I was taught to avoid making mistakes with. Doesn't mean I correct someone else though.

maras2 · 30/03/2014 11:29

5 words for the pedants ........ Piss off to Pedant's Corner .

PiperRose · 30/03/2014 11:29

Personally I think spelling and grammar are very important. I don't think I've seen anyone "rip apart" anyone for this on here and I do think that would be unreasonable, however I don't think a simple correction is.

thebody · 30/03/2014 11:30

yes they are utter twats.

EdithWeston · 30/03/2014 11:31

Please no, don't go to Pedants' Corner!

That's a lovely, helpful place and those who love to discuss language really wouldn't want an influx of aggressive and twattish posts.

Viviennemary · 30/03/2014 11:31

I think it's extremely rude to comment on people's spelling or grammar. Unless of course you happen to be their teacher.

mrsjay · 30/03/2014 11:31

a simple correction out of interest what do you think a simple correction is ?

TrueToYou · 30/03/2014 11:32

If the post is incomprehensible with no punctuation, paragraphs, poor/lazy spelling/text spk I completely understand why people mention it.
However, if it's a post saying "just found out about ow, I'm definately leaving", then to pick up on spelling mistakes is ridiculous imo.
Same with auto correct.

Poor grammar can make a poster's point very difficult to understand, I've seen lots of threads where people can give advice as they have to constantly ask for clarity over many posts, and the thread just ends up being confusing.

Sorry in advance for any typos, I'm on my phone! Blush

wowfudge · 30/03/2014 11:33

Actually there are six words in your sentence maras and the apostrophe is in the wrong place.... Grin. Flame away.....

mrsjay · 30/03/2014 11:34

but you can get the gist of things without worrying about the grammar surely ?

wowfudge · 30/03/2014 11:34

Oops - no five words! Even pedants get things wrong.

FreudiansSlipper · 30/03/2014 11:34

it is an internet forum

people often type as if they are chatting and quickly so mistakes (which for those who want to) can make out often they are quite amusing

we are not writing essays
