I bought a bike on ebay recently. I went to collect and just felt, well.. .. off...
The bike is worth about £3k, it's like new and I got it for around £200. Bargain I thought.
I collected it and the family and house were not typical of one which has thousands to spend on a bike. Think Shameless.
They had a few bikes there and gave me the spiel about having too many/never used it etc.
I have just looked on their recently sold items and it's full of bikes. I feel sick that it's probably stolen but also, they have my address so know where the bike is should they wish to break into my garage and take it back along with my tools, kids toys etc.
I may of course be wrong but what do I do now?

In the defence of the buyer, if it was an eBay auction it went for the highest amount someone was prepared to pay for it. If she did bid and win then she is contractually bound to complete the transaction irrespective of the end price. The concept of too cheap, must be stolen can only really apply to fixed price sales. How can you tell that an item is stolen from an eBay advert? As a final point, would persons trading in stolen bikes really allow customers they do not know to pick up items from their own house?

Check it out with the police and see what they say.

Well I suppose technically it could be a small business, but a small business selling a 3k bike for £200 isn't going to be a business for very long I wouldn't think. Odds on it's nicked, sorry op you need to go to the police and chalk it up to experience. As someone up thread said, if it seems too good to be true it probably is

Yes, it's stolen.

Talk to the police. Chances are the owner has registered the bike with the police - all bikes have a unique frame number on them that's hidden away, and can be used to identify them. Failing that's there's often a sticker on them to say which bike shop they were bought from, and they will normally retain the first owner's details on their systems.

Personally, as a cyclist, I've quite literally had nightmares about my bike being stolen. It's my only form of transport apart from public transport, and I do rely on it an awful lot. It may very well be the same for the rightful owner.

If it's not stolen / registered, you'll be able to keep it. If it is stolen, then at least you'll have a clear conscience, and if you're lucky the real owner may give you the £200.

Definitely report it. The likely outcomes are really all positive:

  1. It's not stolen and you've got a massive bargain with clear conscience.
  2. It is, and the person who's lost a £3k bike gets it returned.
  3. As above, plus the police get a prosecution, reducing risk of theft to others.

I had a bike stolen last year. Managed to recover it after it was posted on eBay within a month of the theft. Had I not seen it, it would be nice to think that the buyer was decent enough to act on legitimate suspicions.

Anyone selling a £3k bike and loads of others should be surrounded by paraphernalia and have a decent amount of knowledge. If this wasn't present, then you should act. Did the original ad show detailed info? Good reason for sale?

It'll be stolen I reckon. Gumtree and eBay are notorious for stolen bikes. A friend lost eight bikes in a raid (she refurbs and builds them) and got her friends to look out to them. Few weeks later one of them hit Gumtree and the police recovered all of them.

A 3k bike will probably have its frame registered.

I am not sure the OP is coming back. Confused

I think he is out on his new bike enjoying the sping weather without a care in the world Grin
