To worry about primary class size of 22

My DS starts school this year and his primary school has an unprecedented intake and his class will be 22. Reassure me that that's ok?

22 is fine.

ImAThrillseekerHoney · 28/03/2014 20:19

Anything less than 15 is getting to be a bit too small IMO. 22 is pretty much ideal.

34 is the norm at my DVD's school. 22 is small in a state primary with rural schools as exceptions ( the ones that haven't been forced to close)

Spero · 28/03/2014 20:20

My daughter has been in two primary schools where class size was 30. She was left on the 'good table' to get on with it with the six others who could be trusted while the teacher ran around trying to contain the others.

So if its 22 fairly well behaved children, this is absolutely no problem whatsoever and I think you are pretty lucky.

Raxacoricofallapatorius · 28/03/2014 20:20

There is no ideal size, only sufficiently staffed.

AmandaTanen · 28/03/2014 20:21

In my area, we have P1 -P3 classes of 24 or less, the year groups above go up to 30 I think. Schools within areas of deprivation have infant classes capped at 17.

BlackholesAndRevelations · 28/03/2014 20:21

What? Are you in the uk? How do you even know this info? I won't find out til 16th April (or are you in Scotland?)

22 is a piddly class size too. As everyone else has already said up there ^^

Janek · 28/03/2014 20:21

fairenuff our local school was 1.5 form entry until recently, so 22/23 in each class, two classes per year. Year one and reception are now 2 form entry, so 30 in each class. But every class from year 2 up has a maximum of 23 children.

nannyj · 28/03/2014 20:21

31 here. Would love 22.

hooochycoo · 28/03/2014 20:21

In Scotland. Don't get aggressive, I am bit trying to be odd or anything, genuinely asking a question out if ignorance. First child going to school and primary school was a long time ago. Everyone round here keeps taking about how large the class sizes will be.

DVDs? DVD's I meant. I don't send my DVDs to school!

hooochycoo · 28/03/2014 20:23

Not rather than bit.

Thanks all, this is really reassuring :-)

kaytola · 28/03/2014 20:24

30 is the norm round here. 22 would be a dream.

BlackholesAndRevelations · 28/03/2014 20:24

If the aggressive comment was aimed at me- I wasn't being aggressive! Just baffled!

spanieleyes · 28/03/2014 20:24

I had 35 last year, 32 this year and can't wait until next year when I will have 20. Bliss!!

Octopusinabunchofdaffodils · 28/03/2014 20:25

22 is great, my DS is in a class of 22 and it's wonderful as they have 4 adults in the class.

RiverTam · 28/03/2014 20:25

every school round here is 30 in a form, and some schools have 2, 3 and even 4 form entry (so up to 120 children in a year). And there aren't enough places. DD (1st and only DC) is starting this September, so I'm in the same position as you and even I'm surprised you don't know this is normal! We've been researching schools for a year!

22 sounds a nice number.

Lilybensmum1 · 28/03/2014 20:26

My first DD had 30 in her class no problems she is achieving above expectations, my DS is in a class of 15, don't worry they always have a teacher and a TA.

ilovesooty · 28/03/2014 20:28

Goodness. If there are parents who think this is a large class in state school and are "up in arms" they need to get real.

Megrim · 28/03/2014 20:28

Maximum class size in Scotland for P1 is 25.

22 will be fine.

BlackholesAndRevelations · 28/03/2014 20:28

Blimey, where do you get a class with 4 adults?!

hooochycoo · 28/03/2014 20:30

Fair enough, be baffled! :-) bit everyone researches things to the nth degree. I know the school is good, it's very local and well loved. But very popular this year apparently. Everyone surprised that there will be five classes

OP posts:
hooochycoo · 28/03/2014 20:31

Good to know that this is fine. Thank you

Pipbin · 28/03/2014 20:36

5 classes? Good heavens that is a huge intake!
