or naive, to be so shocked about carers payments?

My DM, aged 83 gets lower level attendance allowance. Her mobility has significantly declined recently so I spoke to Age UK about the chance of increasing it.

To get higher level, a princely £80 per week, you have to have someone in the house all night, and ideally apparently sitting up with the person, rather than sleeping in the next room as I have been doing.

To get carers allowance, another magnificent sum of £59.75 per week, you have to provide care for 35 hours per week - oh, and if you earn more than £100 a week you're not entitled to it anyway. And its taxable.

I always knew carers got a raw deal, but this just absolutely takes the piss. I love my mum, and I am doing 35 hours caring a week at the moment, the fact that I wont get the allowance wont stop me of course.

I am just so so shocked at the low level of the money. How on earth does anyone manage to survive?

I hope that as she gets better her mobility will improve and I will be less involved - but carers of the world, I salute you.

Mrs DV new turn2Us page with the information on about UC has come out, and I think you can get a Carer's Exemption from conditionality based on what I know about you off MN.

If I hear anything different I will message you on FB, but I think you are exactly whom the exemption is designed for.

sancti I contacted carers uk and they pretty much fobbed me off tbh, I was [shocked] at their apathy.

no help at all.

LetZygonsbeZygons · 01/04/2014 17:34

And they don't think that carers can also get sick -ive been injured/sick for over a month (on top of my own disabilities) and have no one to care for ME, yet ive had to carry on caring for DC who I get no help for whatsoever.

they think were robots. and we don't get sick pay either do we?

overthemill · 01/04/2014 17:40

letzgon I'm really surprised and sorry to hear that carers uk didn't help. I would normally recommend them to everyone. Maybe try again?

LetZygonsbeZygons · 01/04/2014 17:47

replied to them repeating our probs and they STILL fobbed me off, in fact they passed the buck back to social services who'd washed their hands of us in the first place!!!

SanctiMoanyArse · 01/04/2014 18:01

I am sorry about that Let, not my experience with them at all, a real shame :( I always find them pretty useful.

There's this link here , Age Concern can be good too for older adults, and friends recommend Contact A Family though I have not used them.

SanctiMoanyArse · 01/04/2014 18:02

And Y Y Y to sick

I had a breakdown 2 years ago, when we realised we had a third child with autism. GP begged SSD for help for us and was refused.

There is just no sick pay.

overthemill · 01/04/2014 19:37

Contact a family are brilliant too. They are so helpful to people with disabled kids ime

I've just been reading the (horrific) workfare thread, and it made me think back to this one.

my caring duties resumed officially today because DB went home; having said that I've spent at least 6 hours over the last 3 days doing caring style things (admin, phone calls re hospital appts etc etc etc).

I feel so much for all of you in this situation, particularly if you are caring for your DC.

I used to earn around £80.00 pw for four hours a day at a nursery.monday to frifriday. 20 hours.

£60,00 pw for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 168 hours.

you do the maths!

Smilesandpiles · 04/04/2014 18:34

I did the math and I wish I hadn't now.

The grand sum we get for providing that level of care is worth....

36 pence an hour.

(That's rounding it up too)
