To wonder what's so bad about chips?

Well oven chips specifically. I buy the Mccain ones - two ingredients - potatoes and sunflower oil. So why do people think they're so bad?

ADishBest

Me too, and burger king chips. What wrong with them? I thought everyone liked them. Unless they are soggy, who would ever want soggy chips of any kind?

Tweasels · 28/03/2014 11:33

Yes, exactly what ComposHat said.

They're just not middle class enough. Nowt wrong with them in my mind and same goes for fish fingers and chicken nuggets. Not every day obviously, at least alternate with something more middle class. Maybe a pot noodle served with quinoa?

Dancergirl · 28/03/2014 11:35

Oh dear, I thought I was middle class.... Confused

We have McCain Home Chips a couple of times a week. They're the only oven chips worth a damn Grin

I tend to think the same as you OP. Potatoes, bit of oil, who cares. Keep the portions small and have a heap of lovely steamed kale and broccoli and a nice steak with them - excellent meal.

Peas, sprouts and green beans I always buy frozen - better IMO! On the other hand, broccoli and cauliflower and cabbage I would always buy fresh.

NettoSuperstar · 28/03/2014 11:35

I love chips with curry sauce.

Dancergirl · 28/03/2014 11:35

it's the oils. Processed oils aren't great for us at all & the processes necessary to make them 'stable' enough to be used in mass produced foods are even worse.

Heating certain oils also can create a very toxic product.

We are starting to hear (at least in mainstream media now - it has been widely known for years though) how the increase in heart disease isn't actually linked to saturated fats as we have been told by govt's and doctors and media for years now, but to increase in consumption in toxic fats such as processed heat treated vege oils, margarine etc.

How ironic that the fat sold to us as a 'healthy' alternative is actually the cause of the huge spike in heart disease. Is is because of the processes applied to the 'healthy oils' - like heating them to high temps and hydrogenating them, to make a liquid solid - it completely changes the oils chemically.

To a lessor degree the same processes will have been done to the oil on oven chips. And chip shop chips are cooked in vegetable oils that have been heated to high temperatures over and over and over.

I CBA to provide links - but a quick google will reveal all you need to know.

The mainstream media will be increasingly reporting "step away from the margarine" now. Back to butter!

WilsonFrickett · 28/03/2014 11:37

I like Aunt Bessie's midweek roasties.

Sometimes I don't even have them in the middle of the week.

MeepMeepVroooom · 28/03/2014 11:39

Chips, cheese and curry sauce from the chip shop. Best hangover cure in the world Grin

ComposHat · 28/03/2014 11:39

Tweasels why not go for the frozen Iceland chips which you can grill, fry or oven cook?

Foodie twats will surely be in awe of your 'chips three ways' main course.

BeCool · 28/03/2014 11:40

Udo Erasmus is very knowledgeable on the subject & is a good place to start if you want to know more. He has written widely about toxic oils/fats for years now.

I do love chips - but I try and eat them in moderation Grin

mousmous · 28/03/2014 11:41

prefer ofen chips to soggy chippy chips tbh

the dc prefer home made 'chips' (potatoes chipped and baked with stock powder and paprika and butter)

Dancergirl · 28/03/2014 11:43

So how good or bad is sunflower oil?

OP posts:
Lovecat · 28/03/2014 11:52

Chippy chips now give me horrendous stomach ache - I put it down to the oil they're fried in, as when I go to a place where they're fried in dripping, I don't get an upset stomach.

Oven chips are horrible cardboardy things. Unless they're the crinkle cut ones. I have no idea why this is....

Tweasels · 28/03/2014 11:53

Crinkle cut anything is better, it's psychological I think.

Grin at chips three ways. I'll add that in next time a middle class food war erupts at work. There are two women who in the process of trying to out do each other in terms of the complexity of their "cooking from scratch" experiences started engaging in what can only be described as a game of Mallets Mallet involving unheard of cheeses.

brettgirl2 · 28/03/2014 11:59

Its a bit like beefburgers (mnetters gasp and clutch at their pearls while cooking up pasta and meatballs for tea) Confused

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/03/2014 12:03

I fancy some chips now!

aworkingmummy · 28/03/2014 12:04

I love my homemade chips deep fried in lard Shock

BeCool · 28/03/2014 12:06

Sunflower oil itself isn't the problem - it has good levels of Omega 6 etc and Walkers/||McCains etc will have you believe it is a 'healthy' oil. The problem is how it is used by them in the manufacturing process.

Sunflower oil isn't really suitable for frying. Basic infor is available from Wiki says it is OK for 'cooking' but doesn't classify it as a frying oil. For frying oils/fats with high levels of saturated fats are actually better as they are more 'stable' at heat. Essentially the best fat for deep fat frying healthwise is probably lard (in moderation of course) - but this goes against what we have grown up learning.

Wiki basic info to start you off

I want chips for lunch now.

NinjaLeprechaun · 28/03/2014 12:07

McDs fries dipped in strawberry milkshake are the best.

Hot Fudge sauce. Trust me on this one.
Their fries aren't nearly as good since they stopped frying them in animal fat though. Or did they only do that in the US?

BeCool · 28/03/2014 12:07

I want aworkingmummys chips for lunch actually

Finney2 · 28/03/2014 12:08

So basically just cook everything in good old butter and you'll be fine and 32 stone

TulipOHare · 28/03/2014 12:08

I completely agree with your points on fats BeCool . Butter and coconut oil all the way here, wouldn't be caught dead buying marge, etc., etc.

But I don't really have the personality to be an absolutist about it and Home Fries are v tasty Blush Grin

SinglePringle · 28/03/2014 12:08

Southern coated curly fries covered in cheese are the food of heaven.

And chip shop chips covered in salt and vinegar are divine.

wonderingsoul · 28/03/2014 12:12

i prefer home done chips..

cut couple fo potatoes in to thinish strips.. with the skin on obviousely and deep fry...
BEST ever!
