This person has just had a newborn baby and claims they will never move any of their numerous ornaments, small and chokeable knicknacks etc, as when children start to toddle, you just teach them not to touch...

AIBU to laugh heartily at this assertion?

Yabu, we never moved anything in our home and dmil who looks after our DDS never moved anything in hers either.

RoaringTiger · 24/03/2014 12:48

Yabu I never moved my knick knacks with either of my children, they are 6 and 3 now and have known from an early age what they can and cannot touch

AnotherSpinningFuckingRainbow · 24/03/2014 12:49

Really? But didn't you worry that they'd choke on things?

OP posts:
mymiraclebubba · 24/03/2014 12:50

I don't have anything like that but I doubt I would move them, kids need to learn and I wouldn't expect ppl we go and visit to have to move theirs

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 24/03/2014 12:50

Depends on the child.

My child? there is a tide mark of 'things' and it was keeps getting better higher and higher. I spend half much life telling him not to touch x y and z. When I he finally listens I will throw a fucking parade.

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 24/03/2014 12:50

A little naïve maybe. But I am a believer in teaching DC not to touch. I have ornaments and knickknacks around and my children know not to touch or play with them (DC are now 4 and 7). They showed a little interest when they were learning to crawl, but soon learned they were not to be touched, and were easily distracted with their toys.
Then again maybe I was lucky?

changedirection · 24/03/2014 12:52

It depends on the child. We didn't need to move things out of DD's reach, but DS was a totally different matter

Loopylouu · 24/03/2014 12:52

Bloody hell, I had to move everything from ds reach.

His first Xmas (well 2nd) we couldn't have a tree up, even at 13 months he as trying to rip everyhing down. He had to get everything off shelves from when he could crawl, books, DVDs. There was no stopping him at that age, taking him to other peoples houses would leave me in tears. What do you do when a ten month old is pulling CDs of a shelf everytime they get near? I had to watch him like a hawk.

Until he was 2ish, my living room was bare.

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 24/03/2014 12:54

Same. Never moved anything. DDs we're told not to touch.

Loopylouu · 24/03/2014 12:54

Actually, maybe he was more like 3......he's Lot older now, I've blocked out a lot of the horror.

AnotherSpinningFuckingRainbow · 24/03/2014 12:54

You can teach them not to touch, some of them catch on more quickly than others! My DC were fully walking at 9 and 10 months. I wouldn't expect them to understand what not to touch at that age.

AnotherSpinningFuckingRainbow · 24/03/2014 12:55

Loupylou, I think we must have timeshares in the same DS!

OP posts:
Feminine · 24/03/2014 12:55

It depends what they are I think.

Very small objects that can be chocked on should be moved.

FreckledLeopard · 24/03/2014 12:56

I don't recall moving any knick-knacks or ornaments when DD was little. I think I was lucky in that she didn't touch things if she was told not to.

AnotherSpinningFuckingRainbow · 24/03/2014 12:56

That's what I thought, about the very small things. I'm talking about twigs and pebbly shit.

OP posts:
Chopchopbusybusy · 24/03/2014 12:56

My MIL said the same when we first took DD1 to visit. Within a few hours everything was moved. It depends on the child. DD1 touched everything! Anything that was small enough to go in her mouth did.

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 24/03/2014 12:57

DS was walking at 9months, and never really bothered with my ornaments. I guess it really is just down to luck. I just used to say "that's mummies toy not yours" and he would toddle off to his own toys.

Maybe my ornaments were not as interesting as his play centre?

Doodledumdums · 24/03/2014 12:58

Sorry, but it is not as simple as just telling children what they can and can't touch! If that worked with your children then you are very lucky, but it doesn't mean you did something that others don't, it just means that it worked for you!

I have tried and tried and tried and tried to teach DS that some things are dangerous/not his/mustn't be touched- Does it work? Nope! Therefore my only option is to move things out of his reach!

UnicornCrisps · 24/03/2014 12:58

Mine is 9 months and even just sitting down manages to grab things that I thought were out of reach. Everything is touched and everything goes in the mouth. I suppose it depends on the child and their age/understanding.

Fruli · 24/03/2014 12:58

Depends on the child. We've had to move some things, but at the same time we've not put cupboard locks on every door - DD has learnt not to touch.

gimcrack · 24/03/2014 12:58

Depends on the kid. With mine they were allowed to pull out plastic stuff from one shelf in a kitchen cupboard and they learnt not to touch anything else.

Loopylouu · 24/03/2014 12:59

another it is hard when they start touching/pulling things so young. I used to get people saying 'just tell him no' bu he was a baby! He just used to grin and carry on and scream when I moved him.

runningonwillpower · 24/03/2014 13:00

There's two sort of parents.

Those that let there children free range.

And those that don't.

Who is to say which is right. (But the non-free rangers must spend a lot of time policing and correcting.)

softlysoftly · 24/03/2014 13:01

Depends whether you can be arsed to supervise and repeat "don't touch" about a billion times.

We moved stuff Grin

Aworryingtrend · 24/03/2014 13:01

DS is 18 months and we haven't moved anything. We don't have ornaments as such though, just pictures in frames. If he goes near them we say no and distract him. He was never one for putting things in his mouth though.
