One of my male Facebook friends (a colleague aged 40) has put a joke up on the news feed which basically says 'New Sex Positon - Raging Bull' ie: to start having sex with a woman, then whisper another woman's name in her ear and try to keep having sex while she's trying to stop.

He likes to shock but IMO it's a type of rape joke, not at all funny.
So i put the comment ''Not funny''. I could have put a lot more but don't want the entire hospital picking on me (he's very popular).

The problem is that dozens of his friends have 'liked' the joke and made comments like ''quality joke''. Do I just delete my comment before I get hassle for saying it's not funny and block him from my news feed or shall I leave my comment?
I feel that someone needs to pull him up on it but I'm not sure I want it to be me.

I must be the only one that isn't thinking like all of ye ... I don't find it funny simply because its an old joke. but not thinking "omg he finds rape funny".

and before I am flamed I was raped when I was 20 by then bf who wouldn't stop when I said stop in the middle of it

Beamur · 23/03/2014 21:52

Have the courage of your convictions and let your comment remain! I'm probably on the verge of being de-friended by several fb 'friends' as I'm not that shy of making a comment which may be different to their take on life.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 23/03/2014 21:53

Didn't answer the question.

When I see this sort of thing on fb, I sigh and roll my eyes (this would also get a stern head shake) and keep scrolling. I find sometimes it's better to say nothing than have an argument and an awkward time at work until it's forgotten.

However, if you delete the comment, people will know and think you've changed your mind or pussied out. Leave it there. Don't do it again if it causes you to worry Grin

NewtRipley · 23/03/2014 22:00

I'm not on FB. Maybe it's better not to know the contents of people's twatty minds and have to deal with knowing.

Dahlen · 23/03/2014 22:03

try to keep having sex while she's trying to stop.

That's a vernacular definition of rape. And he finds it funny.

Depending on your relationship with him, OP, I would either try to educate him or post a link to HR. A few extra lessons on equalities and diversity and a word to the wise about the use of social media would do him the world of good. If someone else were to be outraged by comments like this he could be accused of bringing the hospital into disrepute. If you work for a public body, you bear a greater burden of responsibility when using social media.

Indeed newt, though it has been quite the filter for some of my friends. Amazing what some people will write, share or like... Yet they might never say it.

MrsCosmopilite · 23/03/2014 22:13

I saw it posted on fb by someone today (on a group board). I reported it to admin.

For starters it's not funny, and furthermore it was not appropriate in that situation. If I was in a pub and overheard it, that would be a different issue.

monicalewinski · 23/03/2014 22:22

It's an old, old joke that has a few different permutations - I can't get het up about it personally although I don't find it funny in the least.

What you've done by just putting 'not funny' has put your point across without getting evangelical about it - imo you've played it just right.

themadcaplass · 23/03/2014 23:05

Leave it. Horrible "joke", and you are entitled to your opinion.

thenightsky · 23/03/2014 23:09

revolting.

Latara · 24/03/2014 12:18

I have left my 'not funny' comment and so far no-one has said anything negative to me.

OP posts:
AnyFucker · 24/03/2014 12:22

Leave your comment there. Who cares if anyone says anything "negative" to you. I think it more likely people have seen it and wish they had the courage of their own convictions to object to woman hating shit like this.

LaGuardia · 24/03/2014 12:37

This joke is as old as the hills. Back in the day, it was funny when everyone still had a sense of humour Wink

OnlyLovers · 24/03/2014 12:41

I'd leave it, even expand on it, and be proud of it. I'd also unfriend him and anyone else I was FB friends with who liked or commented positively on it.

Anyone who challenged me on it, I'd explain my actions to them.

Well done for calling him out, OP. As someone said upthread, 'small' things like this matter very much.

Latara I would get that scummy person off your profile. It is a vile, unfunny cheap-shot non-joke and by getting rid of him hopefully you will cut out all the half-wit "men" who Liked the joke and enable his behaviour.

YANBU to highlight it or be offended, I would be fuming!

daisychain01 · 24/03/2014 13:09

LaGuardia, please, don't equate sense of humour with rape jokes. Tell that to all the women on here dealing with the shattering effects of rape.

And its PA to say " whats the problem, its only a joke, where's your sense of humour?"

No, what it means is we have moved forward in society and realise there isn't an ounce of humour in that crap.

YoniMatopoeia · 24/03/2014 13:16

Well done for commenting. Leave it up.

differentnameforthis · 25/03/2014 07:52

Back in the day, it was funny when everyone still had a sense of humour

Was that when rape wasn't legally recognised as rape between married couples? Hmm

Rape is never funny.
