It wrong-foots me as I try to figure out how to answer.

I reply 'No'. They think that means 'No I don't want help'.
I say 'Yes'. They think that means 'Yes I am ok with the packing'.

It should be: 'Can I help you with your packing?'

If I do want help, I end up saying 'oooh yeah. I'd love a bit of help...' to be really clear.

But is it an intentional ploy on the part of the checkout operator? Cos they all seem to do it.

saving real peoples jobs

People really think this don't they? It's not saving anyone's jobs by boycotting self serve/pack as you scan..... Hilarious that people think this.

Joysmum, you're not meant to pack at the till in lidl and aldi.
They whizz it through and you pack at the packing area.

Saves the fannying around at the till, they get people through quicker meaning less queues and a bigger turnover.

The checkout operators at Lidl have it written into their contracts the speed at which they are supposed to put items through. They and Aldi staff are also all self employed, I believe.

The pressure that is put upon them is immense. ConfusedHmm

If it's a small shop or just a basket, it's easier for the cashier to pack for the customer themselves, but for a big shop I always get a colleague to come and pack. That way I can scan through fast and they can pack fast, saves time for everyone.

Also, a lot shops time their staff and it will flag up if you are not scanning enough items through per hour, hence the quick scanning.

Yep, like Meow says, it's Lidl etiquette to chuck everything in your trolley/bag and take your trolley or bag to the packing shelves. It's not the fault of the staff.

They have fewer staff, but their system is faster.
