We are selling a large item on a well known auction site for someone as a favour....the value has risen quite high. After the bidding started I said when it finishes and we get paid I will give you the money less the fees the site charge...they said 'oh well I did not think you were going to charge us'.....we are not, just passing on fees, we are not attempting to make any money out of this. They have become rather sniffy about it AIBU?

Look I'm just saying I wouldn't do it personally. I like having the protection of both paypal and my creditcard.

LavenderGreen14 · 23/03/2014 17:10

it doesn't offer you protection when you collect - that is the whole point

TTTatty · 23/03/2014 17:11

Cash on collection - as a seller I wouldn't take anything else - leaves the seller very vulnerable to claim - as a buyer why do you need protection? If you have paid and received item then that is fine?
If a buyer pays via paypal then collects item seller has no proof item has been received.
A seller won't open a case for non payment as they wouldn't have handed item over?

NurseyWursey · 23/03/2014 17:14

Lavender Jesus Hmm 2 posts in and you're getting exasperated. Chill.

LavenderGreen14 · 23/03/2014 17:18

OP - don't forget as well as the £35+ final value fee you may have listing fees to pay too.

PrincessWellington · 23/03/2014 17:55

Nursery - you are wrong. Collected items = cash. Or I wouldn't sell it to you.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/03/2014 18:02

About the proof of delivery: If the seller doesn't send something by a trackable method, the buyer can claim non receipt and ebay will refund them without question since the seller can't prove they got it

Looking at it the other way, if a buyer wants to return something, they must also pay for a tracking method - if they don't, once again the seller can claim they didn't receive it and refuse a refund. As with the first scenario, PROOF OF RECEIPT is the issue

Oh, and if OP wants to end the listing, they can only do this is there are more than 12 hours left before the end of the auction - after that it's too late

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/03/2014 18:06

Oh, and about collection: The point here is that there's no PROOF OF COLLECTION - the seller will know the buyer's picked the item up, but there's no actual proof. So if the buyer pays by Paypal then lies that they've not got the item, ebay will refund them and claim the money back from the seller, who'll then lose both the money AND the item. That's why sellers request "cash on collection" becausde cash can't be clawed back

LoonvanBoon · 23/03/2014 18:26

I would definitely end the auction now - citing "item no longer available", as someone said upthread.

The person you're selling for clearly doesn't understand how ebay works & you don't need someone being "sniffy" with you when you're doing them a favour.

As others have said, too, anything that goes wrong will be your responsibility & any negative feedback will be yours.

I'd also like to echo the point that, if it's a large item that needs collecting, then cash payment is definitely the recommended way to go. But then you're reliant on this other person (if the item is collected from their home) to give you back the cash needed to cover your seller fees.

It all sounds like a massive hassle. I wouldn't sell for someone else.

nursery

i do not take paypal for collection only; if you paid by paypal i would refund it and insist on cash, this is not personal but the only way the seller can protect themselves, paypal and ebay will not openly admit this as they lose paypal fees but legally they admit that no signed receipt or anything is proof of collection so it is not advised by anyone to accept paypal for collection items

there is no possibility of buyer losing out as if they pay cash they have seen item so can check it is ok there is no possibility of it being lost in post; if you do not collect you do not pay, if item is not as described you just walk away

buyer protection via paypal is not available on collection items anyway
