to dislike my Henry Hoover?! (lighthearted post)

It's chunky, it's clunky, it's not ideal to store, it gets caught in doorways and behind items of furniture, it then turns over on its side, I often have to yank out its cord rather than it extend automatically, I feel like I've done a workout by the time I've finished with it (though perhaps that's no bad thing!), I inwardly groan every time I have to take it out.

Everyone else I've spoken to loves their Henry Hoover, so I suspect it's just me ...

Love Henry, actually sucks up the dirt unlike overpriced meile and dysons.

Mine falls over too but my daughter loves him and follows me around when he is being used so she can get a shot if Mr henry :-)

gelati3 · 22/03/2014 17:50

My baby loves Henry too! I think you can get mini Henry Hoovers for toddlers. Image, a Henry Hoover family....

Dieu · 22/03/2014 18:00

Okay, have just been hoovering with the Henry red Airobrush head. A vast improvement, both in terms of ease of use and performance. Won't go back to the standard attachment head. Will just de-hair this one each time instead.

I love my Miele too. I got it from ebay. It was a John Lewis ex-demonstration model (apparently), so it was quite a bit cheaper. Before buying, I asked my cleaner friend which her favourite hoover was (she uses whatever the householder has) and she suggested a Miele, so recommended by a professional!

FlumpieWumpie · 22/03/2014 18:18

Have just got to say SEBO. It's brilliant. I do have a Miele (slug pull along thingy) in the loft, but I prefer up-rights. Dyson has always failed me, but the SEBO we bought a couple of years ago is a very good sucker-upper!
My DS wanted a Henry... so I have stuck cartoon eyes on SEBO and now we're all happy!

LadyVetinari · 22/03/2014 19:20

I'm very much in love with my Hetty. It cleans up after my birds quickly and thoroughly enough without knackering my back, and it seems to be very robust and durable.

I work with animals, and we have three brilliant Henrys there (all the pet version AFAIK) because they're great for dealing with hair etc. I often see them in primary schools and restaurants, which is a ringing endorsement when you think about all of the glitter, dropped food, etc that the staff have to deal with!

LadyVetinari · 22/03/2014 19:22

Also, how are you lot causing your Henrys to fall over? Mine's 2 years old and gets used most days, and it's never fallen over. The power cord has always extended perfectly well on its own too...

rabbitlady · 22/03/2014 19:34

It's chunky,
it's clunky,
it's not ideal to store
dieu doesn’t like it
she wouldn’t ask for more.

catching in doorways
furniture snagging
Henry and Hetty’s
smiling faces
need slapping

brushes clogging
cord always sticking
hide them in the shed
or loft, let miele
give them a licking

cumbersome and heavy
watch Hetty and Henry lumber
but you know that
they know, you know
yes, they have got your number.

Dieu · 22/03/2014 19:49

Bravo rabbitlady, encore!

We recently got a Hetty at great expense (we live in Canada and so had to pay shipping/conversion costs) and it is so so much better than the horrible Dyson that dh bought when we first moved. We had a Henry for ten years before that. My mum has a meile and it's OK, better than the succession of bad vacs she had before that, but nothing special. Personally I really really dislike upright vacuums, heavy, awkward and you can't get under anything without having to pull them apart (and probably break them).

Perhaps vacuum choice is very personal?

WitchWay · 22/03/2014 20:00

I had a Henry as a student in a shared house - drove us all nuts as he would get tangled in furniture.

Love my Sebo - on my second now Smile

AWimbaWay · 22/03/2014 21:25

My miele isn't an upright nooka, I hate uprights too.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 22/03/2014 21:27

He sits in the corner at night thinking of ways to punish you,I would be nice if I were in Your shoes

HeartShapedStone · 22/03/2014 21:42

I used a Henry at work to clear up the dust of a rock grinding project, destroyed several rock grinders, but Henry still sucked at the end. Grin

I bought a Henry on this basis and it does the job intended, not sure I'll ever love a vacuum cleaner though.

parques · 22/03/2014 21:54

My smug looking, pissed, break dancing hover!!!!!

Waltonswatcher1 · 22/03/2014 22:03

If there's a house fire I would rescue the kids obvs...
Then it's the dearly loved Dyson . We've been through so much together . Loyal service through good and bad .
Henry sounds like an inferior sucker .
Mother's Day soon - start hint for an upgrade .

TSSDNCOP · 22/03/2014 23:01

Team Miele here too. Give me a M, give me a I etc

Do not give me a Henry because when you pay peanuts you get monkeys.

jellybeans · 22/03/2014 23:54

I prefer Henry to Dyson. Brilliant suction. Only falls over now and then.

OpalQuartz · 23/03/2014 00:03

Yes! I hate mine too. I've never hated any other household appliance. I hate the way it falls over when you try to extend the lead. It's so heavy and I don't think it works that well on carpet. That hole thing on the hose keeps opening, reducing suction.
We bought ours years ago because of the rave reviews on amazon. Someone even wrote that the thing that upset them most about their divorce was that their husband got to keep the Henry. Hmm

OpalQuartz · 23/03/2014 00:18

Will try the other attachment though. I keep hoping the Henry will die so I can get a Miele. It never does though. Had it about 14 years

kiwiscantfly · 23/03/2014 00:24

I love my Henry, he talks to me (in a northern accent apparently) DD also thinks he's the bees knees, and calls him Hemi.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 24/03/2014 16:25

I'm getting a Henry on Thursday and am excited.I need a life/man!!!

RayPurchase · 24/03/2014 16:32

I hate Henry. He is an utter bastard for all the reasons you state. And the fact that I have NEVER heard of a broken down Henry so I am stuck with his stupid smiley face forever.

bluebump · 24/03/2014 16:36

I love my Hetty. I thought I hated my old Henry until I went through two Dysons which were rubbish. I didn't waste any more money on Dysons and went back to Henry/Hetty.

cornishcreamtea · 24/03/2014 16:38

I don't think I have ever owned a single vacuum cleaner which I have thought did a fantastic job. I have a collection gathering dust in the garage. Every time there is a new one out of any make they seem to promise the earth but never live up to my expectations.
