To think that people that use self service tills should

A. Not scan, put all there stuff on other side, pay and ONLY then pack

B. Have a speed test, if they can't find bar code within certain amount of seconds, then they are not deemed fit and proper to use self service tills

C. Should not be allowed to let children scan items really slowly, whilst fighting their siblings for whose turn it is

Or should I just use the real person serving aisle?

This is light hearted! Grin

I took a trolley through the self service till today Blush.

The attendent saw me waiting and herded me to the self scanning area, ignoring me muttering about trolleys not being allowed. It won't happen again, I promise!

GingerRodgers · 21/03/2014 22:43

I take a trolley into self serve tills. Mainly to control dd so I don't have to leg it after her but also as I can't carry my bag, hold onto dd and carry my shopping at the same time.
Sometimes I'd rather battle the self serve than talk to a cashier Blush

It's at the bottom of the screen on Sainsburys ones, a little series of increasing bars like a wifi signal thing IIRC.

If I'm only doing a few things I do the dump them in the bagging area and pack afterwards thing too.

I also get the DCs to unload the trolley and pack at manned tills, they like it and as someone else said, they've got to learn sometime.

Topseyt · 21/03/2014 22:50

Oh, and I am one of those who likes her shopping packed "just so". Wink That may well be one reason why the scan and pack system suits me rather better than other types of self-service.

I'm a pedantic old sod who likes to have it all arranged as I am going round. Then I just have to pay and wheel it out to the car, hoping that I am not flagged up for "random re-scan", which does occasionally happen but I accept it with a good grace. Grin

VivaLeBeaver · 21/03/2014 22:50

Morrisons are the worst. I got halfway through once and gave up. All the stuff I'd already bagged I flung it back in the trolley and stalked off to a manned till. The poor till supervisor was rushing after me begging me to come back.

HSMMaCM · 21/03/2014 22:54

DH thinks he has to look for the bar code before scanning. It takes forever. I keep telling him if he can't see the bar code, then the scanner probably can.

Topseyt · 21/03/2014 22:55

Maryz, the system for re-scan in our local Tesco is that they just select about a dozen items at random from your shopping bags to check that you have scanned them. Not too bad, and usually doesn't take long.

Our local Waitrose has also had them for about 15 years, but I don't shop there due to cost. Tesco has only introduced them here over the last year or so.

JavaSparrow · 21/03/2014 22:58

Caveat: I haven't read the thread Blush
However if I go through the frickun hassle of using one of those things again only to be told card only again, I will smash the screen. Sorry but I am poor and use cash. Blush

One week, three stores, same thing.
Put up a sign. Warn people.
Oh and if you were tutting behind me, I feel your pain, I didn't want to waste my time either. I'm sorry.

aprilanne · 21/03/2014 22:58

in my local asda there is 12 self scanners for baskets .6 with long conveyer belts for trolleys that are self scanners and only 6 manned checkouts of which only about 4 are usually manned .there is a drive through .it is the worst shop ever .only go if i forget something really late at night .

GiveTwoSheets · 21/03/2014 23:02

Am guilty of C except I have just the one kid in tow who also has to scan my club card, put the money in and collect the change but I let myself be forgiven as he is a super fast scanner even at 3!

On the plus side its taught him everything has to be paid for before we walk out the shop.

happybubblebrain · 21/03/2014 23:03

Aren't the self-service tills the reason young people can't find jobs now? Shame on anyone that uses them. So what if they save you 3 minutes.

littledrummergirl · 21/03/2014 23:06

I hate it when people screw up the receipt and put it in the coin slot stopping any more money from going through the till and ballsing it up properly. The amount of nails Ive wrecked fixing that particular problem Hmm

TheVictorian · 21/03/2014 23:07

My main thing with the machines is either unexpected item in the bagging area(even though it's been scanned correctly), and when the carrier bags get stuck together.

NurseyWursey · 21/03/2014 23:14

Kids shouldn't be allowed to scan, nor should they be able to push trolleys. I really don't care if it keeps them happy, it causes inconvenience for other people most of the time.

People who have a million items. Really?

I think you should pack as you go, and just shove it all in there's no need for this sorting out and making everything perfect malarky. None of this just so like Harriet said.

I hate them.

Every time I use the bloody things I scan two items and then the third or fourth one won't scan. Staff come over. The item won't scan. They then override and manually key in the barcode. We carry on.

Next item scans ok.

Then the stupid thing tells me I have an 'unexpected item in bagging area'....

Last week I used a new machine. Installed, said the member of staff "to make things quicker'. I scanned item one and put it in the pushchair. I tried to scan item two and nothing happened. I tried again. Then I noticed the message on the screen saying "place item in bagging area".

Why???

NurseyWursey · 21/03/2014 23:22

I never have any problems I must be lucky! Or our ones must be good machines.

tanukiton · 21/03/2014 23:23

My 6 year old is really good at the self scan. Here in Japan(in the shops that have scanners) they provide foot stools for kids so they can reach the scanner, or they might be for the little old ladies. Bit more kid friendly here, but they have a whole bank of scanners when they are installed so the wait time is much less.

FannyFifer · 21/03/2014 23:24

I refuse to use them.

It's doing people out of a job.

I've never used one so this thread is fascinating.

Quinteszilla · 21/03/2014 23:30

....organize a Till Sit Down to protest against their very existence!

I hate them. They are not time saving. They are a faff and a hassle. I cannot buy wine, or paracetamol, nor Otrivine or condoms without som jobsworth coming to check that I am OK to purchase those items.

WholeNutt · 22/03/2014 07:46

How about having machines that work better.

'Unexpected item in bagging area' where?!
'Please place your item in the bag' I did.
'Please place your item in the bag' I SAID I DID
'Please wait for assistance' argh!!!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 22/03/2014 07:57

I walked out forgetting to pay last week, the supervisor was right beside me and had approved my wine Blush

Fortunately he came after me and saw funny side, I went back and paid.
