To ask some questions about babies that may sound silly

Sort of things I have come across with my new 4 month old baby that I have been pondering, things I feel too trivial and silly to ask in RL.
Ok so here goes,
1, Do you wash all new clothing before baby wears? If so then up to what age?
2, What does a 4month+ baby put on feet? When out and about mainly
3, Is it poor hygiene not to wash mats that have dribble and or posset on? My play mat is not machine washable but it's material so cannot be wipe cleaned.
4, what does a baby wear when going swimming?

Thank you for your help MN!! As always

  1. are you kidding me? First and on,y time baby's clothes look ironed.
  2. baby grow ends.
  3. just wipe if you have to. Mostly just left. Sometimes machine washed the unwashable and most survived. 4 ) swim nappy

I wouldn't personally wash anything until your baby arrives! What happens if she's bigger than you expected? But yes, once sure of the size, you should probably wash.

Babygros - seriously, babies do not need socks or shoes.

Washing machine it anyway.

Swim nappy, but only when you've got there. They leak.

Yes to washing clothes as fabric finish can include formaldehyde and other chemicals.
Depends what else they're wearing and the temperature. So possible tights or socks. Pram shoes if wearing a posh outfit and you like them, but they're not necessary
Wash playmat on very gentle wash and spin if very mucky. Otherwise wipe with a babywipe straight away
Swim nappy

There are no silly questions when it comes to babies :), this is my advice but its only from my 15 months of experience with my DS:

  1. Yes, always wash baby clothes before you use them. My baby had a reaction to a hat I didn't wash. He was fine with it after I'd washed it though. I'll continue to wash his new clothes for the foreseeable, clothes always smell so chemically.
  2. I used 'baggies' from Mothercare for his feet when he was little, there are loads of cute little soft shoes. Don't use any shoe-type things that are hard or even a bit firm, use cloth ones.
  3. Not poor hygiene not to wash mats as long as you clear up the sick. Milton wipes are great for all types of surfaces and I used them on his playmat too. Other than that I just used soapy water and then hung it up to dry.
  4. Waterbabies recommend a swim nappy (Huggies or similar) because they are less absorbent and don't weigh the baby down by absorbing loads of water, using a normal nappy just pulls them under the water. Then a Happy Nappy over the top which is just like a pair of trunks and are suitable for boys and girls. They are tight to stop any poop leaking out and so that they don't hinder swimming by falling off. Unless you're going to a very warm pool then use a wetsuit or an insulated wetsuit, my DS hated swimming until I realised it was because he was freezing and the water wasn't even cold. Babies get very cold very quickly which is dangerous. It's not always noticeable either.

Hope this is useful :)

  1. Washed all three of my children's clothes before wearing up to age 6m. Still wash dc1 as he has sensitive skin (I have to wash mine too as I react to washing powder).
2 babygros are much easier, my later Sumer babies had fluffy boots too when it got cold and also foot muff on the buggy.
  1. Most things wash well.
  2. Swim nappy!

  1. Yes (but now at 10months only one wash rather than 2!)
  2. It was summer so nothing, after about the first month didn't really do babygros except at bedtime. Tights are the way to go, the endless sock on sock off thing is annoying. And according to the gp lots of boys wear them.
  3. Not sure what on earth your play may can be made of! Dd has a pair of handmade quilt things they both go in washing fine (on a delicate wash)
  4. Swim nappy with a happy nappy www.splashabout.com/en/our-products/baby-swimming/happy-nappy/happy-nappy/ over the top. They really do work dd has tested it and pools have to be closed if pooped in!
None of these questions are silly :-)
