To throw away my bedding and possibly never sleep in my bed again.

I just went into my bedroom, all sleepy and comfortable and ready to crawl in and snuggle down to watch netflix.

Only to find a two-inch scorpion had beat me to it and was sprawled on my pillow as if he owned it. I panicked and flushed him down the toilet after a harrowing walk to the bathroom turning the pillow up and down as he ran all over it. I had no idea scorpions could move that fast. I now wish I had taken a picture of the beast but as I said, panic.

I'm afraid to go to bed. Where there is one, there must be more, right? What if it was a mommy scorpion?!!

Fucking hell.

Four words:

Camel spider, giant weta.

I'll leave it up to your discretion re Googling....

Dinnaeknowshitfromclay · 21/03/2014 19:31

A scorpion? Shize! The worse thing we have in bed is grit, Bombay Mix, dog hairs, a pen (for leaving a cross where you left off if the phone rings - ar ar !) and usually a lid of a yoghourt pot (which sticks to yer bum in the night). Not fricking scorpions!

Quoteunquote · 21/03/2014 19:34

buy a mossi net, and keep it tucked into your bed, that way nothing can get in.

Lj8893 · 21/03/2014 19:42

mino I know what both those horrific things are......please don't tell me you've had them join you in bed!!!

HolidayCriminal · 21/03/2014 19:53

We are warned that scorpions in the toilets & really most places is quite ordinary where we'll be staying in the Grand Canyon. Apparently their stings are very rarely fatal but they can be quite painful. Rather like weaverfish, I guess!!

And this is why we are sleeping in tents and NOT in the open air.

minouminou · 21/03/2014 20:56

Lj....

Thankfully no.
I'm no wuss when it comes to bugs, but camel spiders seriously give me the shits.

Wetas don't look real somehow, and lots of people actually find them cute. They're still 'kin massive, though.

Imagine waking up
With a giant weta
On. Your. Face......

Lj8893 · 21/03/2014 21:00

Oh fuck no you did not just give me that image.

RhondaJean · 21/03/2014 21:04

If you can find the picture of the weta eating the carrot, it's kinda cute.

I don't mind six legged things usually, but eight legged things are u aural and the work of the devil.

Op, you must burn the house down, there is no option here.

Lj8893 · 21/03/2014 21:08

Yes I saw that photo and I guess you could call it cute. I wouldn't want to wake up with it on my face but would much rather that than any kind of spider!!!!!

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 21/03/2014 21:24

That one Rhonda?

Sometimes glad that we live in Scotland but we're in a woody area and get tons of spiders (non hairy ones) and those ones freak me out. Last summer one was found by my DGM crawling from under the toilet seat, just after she used the toilet! And a big massive one happened to be on the wall beside the toilet as I went in to proper labour and really needed to go!

I feel sorry for DP though, until a few months ago, I kept a tarantula in the bedroom (he is totally terrified of them) and I also lost a locust in the bathroom!

I was proper amazed by the size of the cockroaches in Florida, I love them and my friend wasn't so impressed when I brought one over to show her that was in a drinks cup (someone had it at reception complaining and I asked to borrow it!) :o

I want some hissing cockroaches but DP is having none of it. :(

To throw away my bedding and possibly never sleep in my bed again.
mygrandchildrenrock · 21/03/2014 21:54

We lived in the Caribbean and one night my 7 yr old dd screamed and there was a scorpion on her ceiling. It was a good few nights before she would sleep in her bed again.

90sthrowback · 21/03/2014 22:06

, why the fuck did I read this?

dolphinsandwhales · 21/03/2014 22:31

Yanbu, you poor person! Can you stay in a hotel until pest control come tomorrow?!

supergreenuk · 21/03/2014 22:34

Oh lord. Burn house down and get in a plane right out of that country.

How brave are you though. Actually touching that pillow.

NannyLouise29 · 21/03/2014 23:28

When working in Tuscany I would regularly remove scorpions from my shower in the morning - horrific, scarring experience tbh.

I hate creepy crawlies, and during that same stint I walked into my bedroom to find a MASSIVE centipede on the wall which promptly disappeared behind my bed. I couldn't go to bed until it had been found and taken away, which caused me to wake my boss, his wife, and the gardener to search. I don't think I slept properly until I was back in the UK!

There shouldn't be a family of scorpions, you'll be fine. I entirely empathise though!

minouminou · 21/03/2014 23:32

That centipede just fancied you and lost his nerve when you came in....

Bwah-ha-haaaahhhh....

Ericaequites · 22/03/2014 02:33

Put mothballs in the linen cupboard. They work for crickets too, so it's worth a try. I live in New England, where we are thankfully short of large insect life.

redcaryellowcar · 22/03/2014 02:39

Do meerkats eat scorpion, perhaps time for some unusual pets?

Misspixietrix · 22/03/2014 08:26

Totally not unreasonable to sleep on the couch OP. In someone else's house. Preferably in another non-scorpion country. Wink.

Misspixietrix · 22/03/2014 08:30

SchroSaw I'm on your DPs side! . Grin.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/03/2014 11:07

Miss :( She was lovely and friendly, the only reason we no longer have fluffy is because the toddler liked her a bit too much and wouldn't stop lyig in front of the tank annoying her.

They're cute if they are huge and fluffy.

The hissing cockroaches are brilliant, I love handling them when we go to wildlife places.

Scorpions and centipedes though, that's the stuff of nightmares!

chipshop · 22/03/2014 11:09

I stood on a scorpion in Tuscany last summer. We'd come in from our final night out and were making our way to the bedroom in the dark. Really hurt my big toe, then it went for DP and he defended himself with a broom. Fun end to the holiday. Grin

Lj8893 · 22/03/2014 11:12

Wait......there's scorpions in Tuscany?! I thought italy was on my "safe" list!

Misspixietrix · 22/03/2014 12:12

I made the mistake of walking into nursery to pick Ds up early (med app) when they had had to Tropical / Reptile house come to visit. Ever tried not to involuntarily swear in front of 30 kids when faced with giant tarantula Blush. .

Misspixietrix · 22/03/2014 12:17

Just stupidly googled the camel spider one. There isn't a shoe big enough. [Shock].
